What can you save when you go the grave?
The answer, my friend’s, not a thing,
Yet the way we behave (and so few of us cave)
Is to add to mementos and cling.
The clothes out of style we’ve not worn in a while,
The souvenirs bought on a trip;
The bills that we’ve paid and the copies we’ve made
Of each document once in our grip…
The books we once read (not much use when we’re dead),
Aging kitchenware, no longer used;
Old cd’s and cassettes – there should be no regrets
If they’re tossed. (Even thrift-stores refused!)
Once-bright towels and sheets, piles of stubs and receipts,
All the playthings of children now grown
Should be given away, so what’s left on display
Are just sparking-joy things that you own.
All this sounds very nice but to heed this advice
You’re much better than I seem to be,
But just take it to heart and at least try to start
(Or procrastinate – that works for me!)

she never threw anything out
the driveway is filled
clothes hang on racks
hers on the left,
a few of his on the right
tables of her shoes
kitchenware, pots, pans
knickknacks, tchachka’s
souvenirs from long ago trips
some of the furniture
will go..there’s no need
for all of it now
the most valuable,
jewelry, some paintings
are in the garage
the money isn’t important
at this point
it doesn’t matter….
how can he put a price
on what’s been taken
his memories aren’t of
a particular dress or
pair of earrings she wore
he won’t look at a painting
or photograph of a trip
and think of her
he misses her smile,
the touch of her hand on his face
the look in her eyes,
how she curled up inside him
in bed at night, stealing his warmth
… when she spoke his name

Just for you,I stayed away from
a guys' night- out of cool poker;
even prevented myself from having
the pleasure of beer on the couch.
But while my hands poured detergent,
ten times over, all I heard were rambles
and gurgles while the plates kept
their oil around the edges. Yes, I tried
to fix your waistline filled with grease,
the pipe clogged from old age.
Serving me well, we both knew
it was time to mark you as junk;
sorry about this, I rang the cargo
man as my hands were beginning
to ache from arthritis.My insight
tried to think without being so
introspective; smudges and a
big loss of fun hours with the boys
made me decide to let you go.
Did I tell you my wife went out
tonight with the girls? And I am left
hanging on to piles of kitchenware,
just you and I on a dreary Saturday.

OK! i'm at the store ! now where's that card isle?
whew! looks like i;ll be here a while.
who ever knew there would be so many cards,
well! there's the Mother's day ones ,that's where i'll start.
i need to go thru these cards pretty swift,
because i still need to figure out what to get her for a gift.
i see kitchenware, i see flowers , i see hats i see rings
what do you get a mother that has almost everything.
ok i found it ! now let me check out ,
because i still have a long drive to get to her house.
we'll give her the gifts after we get out of church,
and then go out to eat til our belly's hurt .
and just thank God for making a way,
for us to have such a glorious and happy MOTHER"S DAY.
