good a so-so feeling
a moment away from the numb

Trapeze artists paint lofty subjects
Some given to Fate's flights of fancy
Though most favor nets over drop cloths
The Sistine Chapel had the Lord's touch

Is heaven where you live out
your dreams
Those fond wishes life never
allowed
Is eternity that place
not yet seen
Where you awaken
—a high flying cloud

Not all of the news apparently was true.
High-flying receiver, what happened to you?
A young pass catcher in the prime of his game,
gets cut from the team, and leaves in shame.
We only heard rumors about what you did off the field.
I wonder what else going around you will be revealed.
What other articles about you will the media yield?
The big alibi is that you are paid too much money.
I don’t know the whole story. It’s a mystery to me.
Why would the team cut you with your ability?

High Flying Flag
Dr. James E. Martin
©December, 2012
The flag was perched aright
It was properly lit at night.
It drew many views,
Was daily in the news,
Till it vanished from everyone’s sight.
