Late 1940s England

the square
   was packed
& the high street full
meat&veg seemed plentiful

market barkers
  drew the queues
with jokes
         impromptu

shoppers filed
     neat& formal
in sainsburys greggs
  & home colonial

the bacon slicer
  shuttled back& forth
rashers scaled
 in halves&fourths

bread mealed smooth&strong
   butter patted shaped oblong
cheese cut with twangy wire
toasted later on an open fire

ham sliced from the bone
 spuds bagged weighed in stones
tea from open square tins
 packet-served with a welcome grin

'woollies' snackbar smells
  'elevenses' hunger time to quell
one mug of ovaltine must'nt dally
so shortcut thru' market alley

where auctioneers tones rise&fall
 above the sheep&cattle stalls
then off homewards at a trot
last pennies spent in feaseys sweetshop

on the train bridge 'spotted' numbers new
waited whilst the 'cutler' raced thru'
along pebble brook time to climb a tree
on this day shopping was made coupon-free

Polo Neck

I got a polo neck jumper.
She said they were in.
Pep wears one.
He hasn’t manboobs.
Ribbed, dark grey.
Tighter than it should of been.
With a vintage leather, black jacket.
Sophisticated,continental,
so I bought a pain au chocolate.
From Greggs.
I think he thought I was francais as
I ordered and added si vous plait.
Then blew it by being unable to resist a sausage roll.
Which later I found out to be rouleau de saucisse, not un sausage roll, si vous plait.

“What the bollocks do you look like?”
“Where’s the Milk tray?”
were the first comments at the pub.
But their jealousy was obvious and measurable, being directly proportional to the amount of beer spat out as I walked in.
I ordered a Pernod chaser with my pint of pale ale, small steps.

Cesaria Sings

Cesaria sings
And takes me away
From the gloom
And grey
Of Glasgow
To a world
Of colour and play

Takes me high
Over endess rows of tenements
Empty bottles of 20/20
And queues for Greggs
That snake round street corners

Within seconds
I'm in a far better place
Sun beating down on my shoulders
As that soothing voice
Tells a story
That can change with every play

A song of loss?
Of pain, vengeance or joy?
It's left to the imagination
With those mysterious words
A never-ending toy
