they’ve found it,
the little bastard,
the switch inside us all
that ticks down like a
bomb.
they call it discovery,
a holy grail
in a white lab coat.
the headlines say,
we can stop the body
from rusting,
from falling apart,
from dying.
but don’t get too happy—
it’s not for you,
or me,
or the kid coughing
on a hospital bed,
his mother counting
change in a paper cup
by the soda machine.
the poor won’t see it,
they never do.
the miracle pill,
the nano cure,
the second life—
all locked in a vault
of stock options and patents.
we’ll keep aging
in dirty apartments,
while the rich buy time
like it’s whiskey
at the corner bar.

Gene starred as Lex Luthor three times.
And he starred in "Behind Enemy Lines".
His death was hard for his fans to face.
He's gone and he can never be replaced.
He was a talented actor who was clever.
It's sad to know that he's gone forever.
Respect was something that he earned.
Gene perished and he will never return.
It's heartbreaking to see such a man die.
He was a terrific person and that's no lie.

Gene Hackman has died and so has his wife.
After ninety-five years, Hackman lost his life.
Gene was a legend and he had plenty of fans.
Everybody knows that he was a talented man.
The last movie that he starred in was in 2004.
It's very sad that he chose not to act anymore.
Gene's death made his friends and family cry.
He perished and it was painful to say goodbye.
But when we go to Heaven, we'll see him again.
Gene was a skilled actor and a credit to all men.

It's sad when I say that Gene Hackman and his wife have died.
Gene starred in three Superman movies and Bonnie and Clyde.
In addition to Gene and his wife perishing, their dog died as well.
I don't know if it was foul play, only time will tell.
Gene starred in many movies, he was born to act.
When I say he was extremely talented, it is a fact.
It is very sad because he's no longer alive.
Gene Hackman has died at the age of 95.

Gene editing offers revolutionary possibilities in medicine, agriculture, and beyond.
In healthcare, it could eradicate genetic diseases, enhance immunity against infections, and personalize treatments.
Agricultural benefits include improving crop resilience, yield, and nutritional value, potentially alleviating hunger and malnutrition.
Additionally, gene editing holds promise for environmental conservation by mitigating invasive species or enhancing the adaptability of endangered ones.
Overall, gene editing has the potential to transform human well-being, food security, and ecological sustainability.

A scientist said to his mate
“We came from the line of primate!”
Said one of the men,
While waving his pen,
“Refer to yourself, not us, mate.”
An ape heard the scientist say
That men share the same gene as they.
The ape proudly said,
“You’d wish you were dead--
Insult us no more or you’ll pay.”

“The mean gene”
The act of treating all living creatures like sh*t
Is it a learnt behaviour
Or ….. are you born with it?

My Missy girl has got a quirk;
when it gets cold, she goes berserk.
Then she becomes the sled dog queen;
I think it is her Husky gene.
Iditerods now, we complete;
she tries to pull me off my feet.
She drags me up and down the trail,
and all the time, just wags her tail.
To cold, she seems impervious,
and also to the times I cuss
when she jerks me into a tree
discovering some scent with glee.
Or helicoptering the leash…
I get that she does not capiche,
and so we all get tangled up:
that's me, six trees, my crazy pup.
But winter cold lights up her world,
so how could I deny my girl?

Irrefutable evolution conduits
Matter tip toes through tunnels
Microscopic nano shifts continue
Outperformers filter free of funnel
Replicas of kept traits hail heredity
Thrivers cognate with larger logic
Attentive nurture forms pedigree
Love poured over timid progeny
Genome keys cut exacting bones
Entrapped wrapped sticky chrysalis
Nature photocopies, care duly hones
Elevating banquet, perpetual Christmas

Peter William Johnson – X
Really loved the joys of sex
First experienced at seventeen
Not the youngest there’s ever been
But by the time he was twenty one
Peter William was dead and gone
Just a poor bloody infantryman
Who gave his life in Afghanistan
Friendly Fire the report said
Whichever way he was dead
Not much of a body was really found
Dispersed by explosive mortar round
From an ally's battle tanks
Who expressed regret and thanks
Didn’t really do any more
Just carried on with that war
In the usual worldly way
He was news for just a day
In truth Peter may never have been
May never have appeared on the scene
But for the son he left in his place
Genes of his Genes to fill his space
For Peter William Johnson – X
Really loved the joys of sex

What on earth made the teen
Go ahead to create a scene
That should not have been seen:
That I watched and was lean;
Ungovernable feathers happily preen?
Only yesterday did Mum him wean;
Who had nothing thought but his well being
An off and on “Where have you been”
And to his mum “What do you mean”
Always for the dead tattered jean,
By expulsion angered and shooting their Dean;
Can’t this be the handiwork of peers, not gene?

Where does one find humour?
Everywhere one looks... at least I do
Others may not see it like me
But maybe I'm just built differently
I was blessed with an oversized giggle gene
It's certainly not a bad thing I guess
Could have turned out to be a serial killer
Often thought I may have missed my calling
But I guess I'm a wee bit old to be starting a new career
So I'm really sorry, youse guys are just going to have to suffer
“Did you hear the latest one about...”
Sorry! I promise to make it more sophisticated
And only post hoity toity type humour like
“Didst thou heareth the most recent humorous episode chronicling...”
Holy crap! That'a really snotty!!!

At times twist and shout
Might even call it a scream extreme

Sonnet: Duet (II)
by Michael R. Burch
If love is just an impulse meant to bring
two tiny hearts together, skittering
like hamsters from their Quonsets late at night
in search of lust’s productive exercise . . .
If love is the mutation of some gene
made radiant—an accident of bliss
played out by two small actors on a screen
of silver mesh, who never even kiss . . .
If love is evolution, nature’s way
of sorting out its DNA in pairs,
of matching, mating, sculpting flesh’s clay . . .
why does my wrinkled hamster climb his stairs
to set his wheel revolving, then descend
and stagger off . . . to make hers fly again?
