Grow and consume, drink all life.
That beautiful withering void.

Set your heart ablaze,
take back your throne.

Grandmother was a beauty in her way
Dark brown skin like a Hershey bar
Salt n pepper black hair wisped by wind
As she snaps green peas in a bowl
The sunflowers she planted so romantic
Casting seeds like red roses in the breeze
Feeding the birds in belly and our eyes
Like bowling balls knocking down such sights
Her bare feet ashy knock knees calloused
From praying the most selfless prayers
She dips snuff and spits in an old Pepsi can
Unashamed of her poverty and southern accent
Devoid of volition, the sunflower follows the mellow sun all day.
Right now, the heat here in Texas is brutal causing all our once brilliant flowers to wilt in the hot afternoon soon, all except the sunflower, the inspiration for this simple poem

In the blithe breeze
A baby’s hand opens to the light.
In a daze, the radiant blaze, towering flower
arching toward the golden solar rays.
In a time-lapsing daydream, it rises, stretches
and unfurls, soaking in and beckoning the sultry Sol,
the simmering summer Sol.
No wonder it is seen as good luck.
First conceived in childish crayon,
It bears the ragged, jagged edges
of toddler joy, of a blunt golden celebration.
Clutch it to one’s chest,
the Raggedy Ann blossom,
the perennial of laughter and glee,
great daisy pregnant with seed!
