FIRST OR LAST ONE CANNOT PASS
THE BOUNDS ARE SET, ALL DAYS ARE KNOWN
AND HOURS NOT NUMBERED LESS CONTAIN ALL LIFE
ADJOURN SOON, WHISPERS WINTER
LOSER FOR A SUMMER'S SEASON
JUNE THAWS, IRONIC GREEN
A LIFE FOR DEATH AND ALL ARE MEAN
THREE TO ONE WITH FOUR CONTENDING
VICTOR LOSES SEASONS ENDING
SEASONS ROLL TO LEAD OR FOLLOW
LEFT ERE AWARE SPRINGS WINTER HOLLOW
CRUST TO DUST IN BREATHS SO NEW
AGAIN THE END AGAIN BEGIN
FOR SUMMER'S BLOOD TO WINTER TOXIC
AS SPRING TO FALL SURRENDERS ASPECT
TIME, THE JUDGE, REWARDS DISCREET
SUMMER'S LOSS IS WINTER'S TREAT
FOUR WINS FULLY EQUAL LOSSES
FOUR FOREVER EARTH EMBOSSES

Softly
you enter the red tide, that sateen
landscape lithographed on the back
of eyelids.
Aging
means not caring anymore.
A sea of sidewalks await--
celestial and gray in the evening
tonality.
It always ends that way.
A magenta moon embosses
a chiaroscuro sky. A cicada
churns ancient stories
in the netting of apple trees.
Motionless, you blend with earth,
one ear sojourned
with new-mown grass.
We enter and re-enter
that awful under land, that soft
sluicing of a thousand salmon
in the distance.
It always ends that way
vining upon the portico
of moon
as gray-edged thrushes
ferret the sky.
