Speak of the devil incarnate
to give the devil his due
not to play devil's advocate
tho' devil-may-care
the devil is in the details
and while we're there
to state so now would be opportune
he who sups devil's food cake
or devilled eggs with the devil
should have a very long spoon
but if we don't the devil you say
better the silver-tongued devil you know
or there'll be the devil to pay
and we may go to the devil and be
between the devil and the deep blue sea
but it's the devil in me
as for the devil I have no sympathy

Unpretentious Vanity
Today is a special day in our lives
I met you four decades ago
Time rose to blissy heights
You waited for me to grow
For you were more mature than I
I teased you on my birthday
For not knowing your own birthday
Couldn't believe that without parents
None knew yours but their own ofcourse
I loved you with devilled madness
And thought nothing could be more divine
Than St. Valentine, the patron of all cupids
On that day I calendared your birthday when
St. Valentine lived in much ignorance
Today the world flaunts a lover's day
That you and I in unpretentious vanity celebrated

There’s a line of flapping, red-starred flags,
they wag their rags, as dogs wag their tails,
when the master’s home;
and the summer wind taunts their linen
crease; then takes them on a merry jaunt,
a widow’s pooch, in heat.
And up above the red-devilled street, a
dipping, flipping, swift-filled, livid high;
counts flags, dogs and masters, sighing
swifts and bleeding sky.

Eggs, eggs, glorious eggs
I could eat 'em three time a day
Scrambled, poached or sunny side up
I love 'em any old way
Eggs, eggs, glorious eggs
Like a yummy egg salad sandwich
Devilled eggs, I could eat by the dozen
I'll even try one from an ostrich
Eggs, eggs, glorious eggs
Now to some, this may sound icky
At times I'll add a raw one to my cereal
That's probably not for the finicky
Eggs, eggs, glorious eggs
I'm aware of a most recent recall
Detected a trace of salmonella poisoning
Now that won't deter me at all
Eggs, eggs, glorious eggs
Just keep eating 'em, don't have a choice
A day without these delightful wee treasures
Is the pits, no chance to rejoice

I brought the wise men to mine eyes to read that I may see
Beliefs and fears and outright lies of life's great mystery
In learning years I held my say to await the savant's call
To clear my mind and find the way, the truth that answers all
I looked and longed that I may find the path that sets one free
Yet still was chained for faith so blind could shed no light for me
Deliverance was not my gain if there is such a thing
But pious paragons I disdain who preach then loose their sting
And as I rest, my days but gone, and think what life's about
I wonder at these souls who shone and prayed through devilled doubt.
Heavens and hells, chimes and bells of high theocracy
Don't ring for me for all I see is rank hypocrisy.
Don't ring for me for all I see is rank hypocrisy.

We half-hearts cling as scaffold
Mouths of cellophane statements
Morphia inducing as our eyes talc-storm over
Seeing nothing in everything
Like a tank we collide, by the
Edges of a summer vortex pushing as bulimia
It is only the intoxication of drink talking
However, I am yet to take even one mute glass
Empty bottles clutter regardless like rats swan-necked
And corner-slipped like zymotic casings
Speaking slow theremin thunders
Water-washed into neck-delicate walls meeting
Vapour hitting equal to bullets or butterflies
Equations of minus mixed with minus
A downward spiral of blitz-neon roars
Sekt and saxophones hitting like opium
To a rotten core; and I'm sure you remember
If you do then I hate you, and if not you disgust me
How I gave your apple back and
How my Bohemia is your gate
And how my gait is quite unassuming
But again, my sweet heart, it is only a larynx painting the air
With a true-to-type blue-blooded red-devilled roar.
