Bright orange daylilies reach for the sky
Standing at least six or seven feet tall,
Brightening the corner next to the wall
With commanding presence, not at all shy.
After the blooms fall, we cut them back
Knowing they’ll return by the next summer
Profusely invading but never a bummer,
They bring vibrant color taking us aback.
From mid-July through the long dog-days,
The daylilies waft with the gentle breezes
Some are blooming until the first freezes
Along the roadsides, too, the color sways.
Rich in sweet nectar inviting the butterflies
Daylilies are a staple for the monarchs, too,
In reds and yellows, and a red-orange hue,
Raising their glorious trumpets to the skies.

I ambled along near fencerow newly built
Running my fingers through the tall daylilies,
Each trumpeting bloom at the top of a lanky stilt
Bringing back memories of mountain hillbillies.
My father once said the daylilies were intrusive
But I thought them lovely mid-summer blooms,
It was clear to me they never sought to be elusive
Showing giant reddish-orange and yellow plumes.
Very little tending the daylilies need to flourish
They'll make an appearance yearly in proliferation,
Not requiring an especially rich soul to nourish
Their profusion caused my father exasperation.
I don’t know why he despised them so, since
They certainly did no harm while volunteering
I have always thought them lovely near a fence
As I amble, they sway and wave like cheering.

Tall and proud
Daylilies
Wrinkled
Discolored
Disheveled
Past their prime
Deprived of warmth and sunrays
Survived cruel dips in weather
Braving long cold nights
Rebellious to fall’s arrival
Flaunting boldest efforts
Stubborn to impress
Express last splash of splendor
Hanging so desperately
To the vestige of their youth
