Claudius Poems

Saint Valentine

Man of good intension, of love, honour,

though defied Roman emperor Claudius,

became a Martyr died without mourner,

yet over centuries became most glorious,

Roman army free of affection or love,

dedicated Fighting men was Claudius's law,

man of the cloth married lovers as he should,

Claudius beheaded him and that's for sure,

from priest to Saint this good man became,

lovers all over the world now celebrate,

fourteenth of February they did proclaim,

due to his death and his undesired fate

this most important day for you and mine,

thanks to wonderful acts of St Valentine.

Premium MemberNew Nine Month Rule

This bears repeating, every December (and February, and March):

We have five December birthdays
in our immediate family.

February is the love month,
not March, never March, okay?
Some are confused about St. Valentine
who, though he championed love,
would have scoffed at our customs.

Claudius the Cruel*, Queen Juno**,
birds mating, and fertility rites
have no bearing on March.
Please pass the word.

December birthdays
thin budgets, time, and tempers.
The month of December
is for Christmas, don'tcha know?

March should be off limits
in the bedroom.
Every woman should hang a sign
on her bed on March first:
On Vacation for one month!

What, no one told your mother
about the nine month rule?

*Ordered St. Valentine beheaded in 278 AD
**Roman Goddess of marriage & childbirth.

On Valentine's Day

far back in 278 Anno Domini
Emperor Claudius II had hung
a holy priest called Valentine,

Captain Cook on the 14th of '79
having circumnavigated his life was
not a God, so killed by native blood line

the Teddy Bear's 14th felt sorrowfully
when lost to him on that day in '84
his mother, Mittie, and wife, Alice Lee

that was the day back in '29
when thugs gunned down thugs
their revenged vendetta time

same time as Chicago gunned down
penicillin was also discovered
supplanting the sulfa drugs around

dehydrated with fever oozing out
virally you left too that 14th day
leaving me with a sorrowed doubt

so remembered year after year
love's shot in the heart
of those brothers we hold dear

in some future 14th to come, perhaps
my loving lover's gaze I'll remember
handing some flowers, a love relapse

Hamlet

The Ghost visited Hamlet
So that he wouldn't forget
That his father was murdered
And evidence was to be gathered

Claudius sat upon the throne
And the treason was unknown
Why Gertrude favored him
And brought grief to all of them

To be or not to be
Hamlet's state seemed to be
While Claudius plotted and plotted
And people in their homes snorted

A play within a play
In drama had come to stay
What appeared to be a tragedy
Was it a fiction or comedy?.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Julian (Flavius Claudius )

What Julian sought I have sought
In razed and restored clay temples
We have always worshiped words
These gods upon the Olympian crags
splinters of reason, waterfalls
splashing, numinously upon our heads

Then, i thought i ran out of words
life draining them, slowly, dripping
blood-like, into a sterile shallow pool
of responsibility, but i sense
your new words, surrounding me
i perceive it was just a deception

i am not just an animal, led
to the bleakest slaughterhouse,
i will go out bleating, words
and the last thing i hear
your new words, ringing
in my mad, but never cowed brain.

The Dagger's Edge of Your Kiss

Who shall kiss Claudius
And sit right of him

I kiss him, not,
With a kiss, but
The edge of a dagger

Do not let the right hand
Know thy left hand

Seek joy in it
Seek bliss in it

What make of this
Cold dark kiss that
Cuts the flesh

I shall not betray you

These voices have eyes
To reason, confess

What lies and shame
Speak to this face of death

The sweet kiss is
Much sharper than
The dagger’s edge

As Loud As the Wind

Claudius, I see your face in this lonely crowd
Your voice, as loud as the wind
Just listen to your soul, again

What dwells inside the sparrow’s heart
Today, I walk along the shores of tomorrow
Do not weep, my green-blue sparrow

Break bread again or this chance shall end
We dance between sweet earth and moon

If you drink nectar with the Greek Gods,
You shall achieve immortality
I think I hear the God Zeus chuckle

Thirsty blue sky, I shall not drink of thee

These wings have climbed stairs and clouds,
Achieving pure flight, in the silent wind

Claudius, I see your face in this crowd
Your voice again, as loud as the wind
