Happy Things

I was thinking today
Of things in my mind that stay
Sunny days on my bike
Riding to the beach and back before night

Of shows on TV after school
With fun being the golden rule
There was Lost in Space
And The Monkees at their place
Don’t forget The Beatles singing their songs
With me playing the air guitar and singing along

Roy Rogers and Trigger riding the range fast
Cisco Kid and oh Pancho friends to the last
And the Brady Brunch was fun
Falling for Marsha was number one
Disneyland on a Sunday night
Bathed in clean pyjamas felt right

As Aussie children we had it all
Sunshine in the summer having a ball
And entertainment on the TV
We watched it lying down in front so easily
These happy things float in and out of my memory
Not wanting to lose those years being carefree.

Premium MemberWhos the Daddy

Those yanks in their tanks never got many thanks
The locals moaned, ‘they’re over here’ *
We Brits had the ration, those yanks sought out passion
With cigarettes, chocolate and beer

Girls couldn't rely on a whiff of a nylon
So legs got the tea or the gravy **
Eye liner pencil sufficed for the seam
The trick was to not make it wavy

But Typhoo and Bisto for fellas from ’Cisco
Was something quite hard to explain
Those girls would do lock ins with painted on stockings
All thankful that it didn't rain

Then with the war over and husbands at Dover
And Uncle Sam’s troops on their toes
Wives by the dozen had buns in the oven
And those baby’s dads were John Does

             ——

* Over paid, over sexed and over here - a reference to American GIs
who came, seemingly, laden with otherwise rationed goodies.

** In the absence of nylons/stockings, women would ‘stain’ their legs
with tea and draw on the seam. According to Mr Google, some even
used gravy. Neither were waterproof and rain (in Britain?) was to be
avoided at all costs.

My First Tv

Before they used computer chips

and printed circuits too,

TVs worked with different parts

like capacitors and tubes.

Our neighbor was a repairman

and he was quite adept,

he'd given me an old TV

to satisfy a debt.

I wrestled it to the basement,

put some rabbit ears on top,

plugged it in an outlet,

and on the floor I plopped.

Our Philco was a color set

but here I'd rather be,

watching shows all day long,

just me and my TV.

Twilight Zone, my favorite show,

could always make me shiver.

How about the lone masked man

and his trusty steed named Silver!

And don't forget the Cisco Kid,

Matt Dillon, Doc, or Kitty,

Perry Mason was the best,

and wasn't Della pretty.

I laughed at guys named Gleason,

Kovacks, Berle and Benny.

And one guy who was really cool

I think his name was Lenny.

Good things, they say, always end,

and I say this with a sigh,

in the middle of my best year yet

the TV up and died.

That summer stays inside my head,

now you know the reason.

I won't forget the thrills I had

in my first TV season.

Poem of Lyrics Two Rings

Once there was a way to get back homeward
I am I said
to no one there
Ring ring golden ring
around the sun around your pretty finger
Another pleasant valley sunday
God Bless the little man
and it burns burns burns
the ring of fire
the ring of fire
The only one who could ever reach me
was the son of a preacher man
Lord brother love brother loves travillin Salvation show
And the thunder rolls
For to live without your love is just impossible
You are so beautiful to me
She's like a rainbow
If your goin to san Fran cisco
be sure to wear some
flowers in your hair
Pretty woman

My Memories of Fried Chicken

Memories of my mother and grandmother
 and there fried chicken…

First was my grandmother killing
the chicken, with a broom stick and bare
hands (won’t go into details, to gross)…?

As the chicken flopped around the ground
for awhile bleeding out my grandmother
would get out the gas burner and prepare
the boiling water, then the chicken would
take a nice hot bath, so the feathers
would come out easier…

I watched my grandmother plucking
its feathers then searing of the pen feathers…

One thing I didn’t like was the smell
of the wet feathers and the seared pen
feathers, awful…

After all the prep came out the cast
iron skillet, Cisco, the floured, salt
 and peppered chicken…

Time seemed so slow when you
could smell the chicken cooking, but you
knew dinner wasn’t far off, for by the
time dad came home from work, washed
up dinner was on the table…

The deliciously fried chicken, side
of vegetables and the mashed potatoes
with pan drippings gravy,
Oh, soooooooo goooooood.

I am sure making myself hungry…

My Favorite Horse

The horses of my childhood
Do you remember too
Mr. Ed and Fury
Just to name a few
Roy had his Trigger
Dale had Butter Cup
They were stuffed and mounted
When dead – just look it up
Spin and Marty had Skyrocket
On the Mickey Mouse Club show
Hoppy rode in on Topper
That’s one you might not know
When he rode in on his Traveller
Robert E. Lee looked stately
Comanche survived the Little Big Horn
You don’t hear of them much lately
Lone Ranger had his Silver
Paladin had his Rafter
The Cisco Kid - Diablo
They brought us tears and laughter
Which one was my favorite
Why – the last one that I’d seen
There upon my TV
Or on the movie screen

Unsung Heroes

What would Westerns be without Horses
Would our heroes be as well known
Without their equine companions
They’d chase the bad guys on their own.

Roy would be lost without Trigger
And Gene without Champion - no way
Hoppy relied upon Topper
To keep the bad guys at bay.

“Hi-Ho Silver” yelled the Lone Ranger
Tonto followed with “Git em up Scout”
These guys relied on their horses
That’s what Westerns were all about.

Tom Mix rode Tony The Wonder Horse
That goes back a long time ago
Cisco Kids mount was Diablo
Red Ryder rode Thunder, I know.

There were other well known horses
Like Flicka and Thunderhead,
Fury and National Velvet
Black Beauty and of course Mr. Ed.

So as these Heroes rode the range
To find an outlaw who’s hiding
Lets pause and give some credit
To the Horses that they are riding.

A Piece of Cowboy Fun

I know that once the West was wild
This I learned when still a child
The matinee on Saturday was the best
To see the cowboys clean up the west
My favourite was the man in the mask
‘Who was that masked man?’ I hear some ask
None other than the brave ‘Lone Ranger’
Who rescued all who were in danger
With Tonto who was his very best pal
And always there was a glamorous gal
There was Roy Rogers and trigger too
Cisco and Pancho, to name a few
Hopalong Cassidy, Tarzan and Jane (oops they slipped in)
And who can forget ‘Big John Wayne’
After the flick we came charging out
Galloping our horses and mucking about
Holding up buses with pretend guns
Hounding poor dogs for cattle runs
These days of innocent fun are gone
But in my mind they still live on.

Heros Meeting

The phantom called a meeting for he wished to unionize
the trucks had been delivering unloading their supplies.
Batman and his Robin boy came bursting through the night
the shadow showed up early to find the perfect light.

The Ranger with his six gun didn't come alone
Tanto rode up with him mounted on his roan.
Cisco came in swaying to his mariachi band
Poncho had his plate of beens and burito in his hand.

When Zero used the bathroom it's there he left his mark
while the sargent rode in circles all about the park.
When Spiderman showed up his shirt was all a mess
a pigeon on a window sill had do-doed on his vest.

I tell you it was crazy when they argued over dues
all they did was sit and eat and drink the phantoms booze.
When the meeting was ajourned the phantom left the room
the heros followed close behind and the room was left in ruins.

They should have never tried to organize
that should have came as no suprise
One has only but to realize
is that why the're all disguised
