My First Tv

Before they used computer chips and printed circuits too, TVs worked with different parts like capacitors and tubes. Our neighbor was a repairman and he was quite adept, he'd given me an old TV to satisfy a debt. I wrestled it to the basement, put some rabbit ears on top, plugged it in an outlet, and on the floor I plopped. Our Philco was a color set but here I'd rather be, watching shows all day long, just me and my TV. Twilight Zone, my favorite show, could always make me shiver. How about the lone masked man and his trusty steed named Silver! And don't forget the Cisco Kid, Matt Dillon, Doc, or Kitty, Perry Mason was the best, and wasn't Della pretty. I laughed at guys named Gleason, Kovacks, Berle and Benny. And one guy who was really cool I think his name was Lenny. Good things, they say, always end, and I say this with a sigh, in the middle of my best year yet the TV up and died. That summer stays inside my head, now you know the reason. I won't forget the thrills I had in my first TV season.

I was a kid in the time of our first tv. I still remember "It's Howdy-Doody Time", which also featured Clarabelle the Clown. The Lone Ranger was my big hero. I still remember his last words in each production, "Hi-Ho Silver, away!! Very well written.

Ha, ha! Brings back the floodgate of memories, this one does. So many great shows on back in the day... And it was kind of 'nagging fun' to watch that tube warm up for 45 - 60 seconds before the picture finally came on. Thanks, John!

Thanks for reading. We got all the Chicago stations when I was a kid. Some day I’ll tell you what I did with the picture tube after I took the set apart. John

I remember our first TV, too, John, a black and white Philco with a tiny screen, but oh, what a thrill. And I think we may very well have been one of the few families on our block who had one. Great memories, indeed!
