Hunger
Not even a crumb in the bread bin
No trace of nice icing in the cake tin.
I looked in the larder
Dark, so I looked harder
Its shelves bare and empty no trace,
Its previous good food had left stains.
So where do I go to find something
My appetite crying to eat?
I could go in the garden and sit on its seat
And hopefully somehow some fragment
Of nourishment somewhere would fall.
A crow could fly over
With food for its young ones
And carelessly drop me a crust.
I’m glad my Redeemer
Never lets me go starving
Never lets me dry up in my soul.
It’s true that he sometimes sends feelings
That make me feel needy and thirsty
But always He’s waiting to give.
He knows my deep need
He knows how to feed
And somehow he’ll work in my soul.
Somehow he’ll make me feel hungry for Him
And prove to me there in my uttermost strife
That He, precious Jesus, my Jesus,
For me is the Bread of Life.
Hop - two, three, four.
Socks - two, three, four.
Wait a minute! Where
Is Red One's partner?
Not over here.
Not over there.
Not behind the pillow
Or under the chair!
Red Two must be playing
Hide and Seek with them and us.
When he disappeared last time
The boy's mother made a fuss!
She told her son off because
He didn't roll them into pairs.
No. He just chucked them
Down the stairs.
Red Two is no ordinary sock.
He likes to travel alone...
Who knows what he gets up to
Around the home?
One day, he was hiding
Under the dog's chin.
Another time he was found
In the bread bin!
He's sometimes very naughty.
What do you think?
The other day he turned
Some white shirts pink!
Things sure do get crazy
When he is not on scene.
Ah! Maybe he's been eaten
By the washing machine!
Fancied boiled eggs
with brown bread for this morning’s breakfast.
Well, that was the plan.
Boiled them for ten minutes
then out of the pan.
Put them by the breadbin
I would surely not forget.
Pottered around the kitchen – tidied up, washed up
pottered around the bedroom – made the bed, tidied up
thought: what shall I have for breakfast?
Oh yeah, muesli, haven’t had that in a while!
made muesli, ate muesli, washed up.
Two eggs sat by the bread bin
still in their shells.
Egg mayo sandwiches for lunch, then.
Unless I forget!
The bread bin been raided, dungarees on
Down to the park with the ducks and my mum.
Dandelions and Daffodils decorate the bank.
Big dogs and little dogs staging fake fights.
Daisy chains necklaces made for fun, petals pulled off, love me, love me not
I'm down in the park feeding the ducks.
Dads down on the bank side drowning a maggot.
I'm sat on a pier with my dangling legs, just feeding the ducks.
Ducklings are quacking and following mum
The drake diving for food and fine dining on grubs
The day light is fading and my mind wonders off
And I remember reading Beatrix Potters books
And just can't help but wonder if this is the original jemina puddleduck
These days are for dreaming and feeding the ducks
As daddy long legs dance on the pond
and then it's time for dinner and a nice drive home .

The dog stood in the bread bin
He was staring out to sea
So he baked some scones, bread and cakes
And we had them for our tea.
