Get them in the schoolyard
kick'em in the pants
force them to listen to
your insufferable rants
Make them sit in silence
loudly make it clear
any one who TALKS to them
will soon be sittin' there.
Tell them they'll be punished
until THEY act as WE
constantly remind them
that KINDNESS IS THE KEY.

I remember it very well.
It was before the birth of email.
It was a real 'show and tell, and
It rings in my heart like a bell.
Mankind has always found bigger
And better ways to communicate.
Over time and space, such avenues
Have been greatly excellerated.
In the early 70's, cell phones were large
and rare, but landline phones were everywhere.
Those landline phones helped to communicate
The love and romance that were in the air,
And to tell a lover how much you cared.
But for me, and much more importantly,
There was a US POSTAGE STAMP in 1972,
First issued in 1971. I used a few of them
To send love letters to my wife to be. Although
The price of the stamp was low, it was not free.
There are no proofs of the phone calls or the
Automobile drives from Chicago to Northern
Indiana, but thanks to the 8 cent Dwight
Eisenhower postage stamp, there are many
Love letters to prove how romance was kept alive
By the connection provided by a postal stamp.
Dwight D. Eisenhower's picture was on that stamp.
The pose was inspiring and a rather stately one,
I might add. That stately stamp helped to shine
Light upon our young lives like a lamp.
That Eisenhower stamp is a most memorable
And vital part of my life's story. Its been 50 plus
Years now, but my wife and I still have many
Of those love letters. And when we read them,
It always makes us feel so much better.

I have traveled the world
Across the oceans and great lands
I have seen this earth from high above
A majestic orb in clouded beauty
From afar the pain of man, unseen
I have exposed myself
Like a naked Rembrandt on display
I was seen in the museum of the common man
As I journeyed far and wide
No one took any notice, of my quiet observations
All my voyages have ended
So now I sit tranquil in the corner
One day, someone will discover me
And see, the stories I have to tell
Of kings and Queens, and lovers lost
I may even tell a tale of woe
A sad story, buried in old archives
Of a love that was both great and sad
For those in love who never knew
The love letter lost, postage due

Light Verse
Brothers Grimm could tell many a tale
Some of the endings could turn you pale
Rumpulstilskin stamped his shoe
Got stuck tore himself in two
That edition* did not go on sale
1857 version of Story
The ending of the 1857 edition saw Rumpelstiltskin die by being ripped in two. Now that is pretty gruesome, right? But how did this event happen? Did someone do it to him, or did something else happen.

We used to lick our postage stamps
To stick them on a letter;
But now the stamps do self-adhere,
Yet does that make life better?
And that’s how Vanya’s rant begins
In Chris Durang’s new play*
Which I feel very privileged
To have watched and loved today.
The character bemoans the fact
That life has changed so much;
Today we need technology
Like weakness needs a crutch.
And though life seems much easier,
It comes at quite a cost.
The things that once connected us
Have somehow all been lost.
The younger generation
Can’t remember stamps we licked;
And the old days being better
They would surely contradict.

a food stamp phone, a food stamp phone,
my ole lady wants a food stamp phone.
chatting all night with jean, tom, and joan
my ole lady wants a food stamp phone.
says she must have one to connect with the
people she needs to talk to the most and I'm always
gone and she's so alone.
she's willing to give up t.v. and whatever else there is
as long as she can have a food stamp phone.

I know that it is essential
To fast as we pray
It has happen for centuries
It's fashionable that way
But, there is one thing that
I have to say........
-
As I pray each day of the week
My soul is somber
I'm meek and I'm weak
But the good Lord know's
I need something to eat
-
I know that it is essential
To do this this way
But I seem to get sleeker
Every day
-
There are so many reasons'
Why I should pray
But, it is hard to pray come's
Food Stamp Day
Fore that is the day
That i can get something to eat
A loaf of bread and maybe some meat
Their are so many thing's
That I want to eat
But to be true to my religion
I must make the retreat
-
I could sure use a
Piece of pizza pizza
Or maybe some Chicken fi' lay
I know that I need at least something
To get me threw the day

The Postal Service doesn’t have
Too many in its camp
And I know why, for I just learned
It’s 50 cents a stamp!
No wonder folks send e-cards
And pay all their bills online,
For 50 cents a stamp provides
A solid cause to whine.
I mostly purchase sheets of stamps
Which last me quite a while,
So buying just a single isn’t
My accustomed style.
And yet today, to mail a card
That wouldn’t be belated,
I gave the clerk 2 quarters
And for change I stood and waited.
‘Twas then I learned that 50 cents
Is now the going rate.
I think towards e-cards I may just
Begin to gravitate.

Being a poet means (of course ) that I am not rich
So I headed off to the food stamp office
Across form me while I wait
are 3 females
One is a Moslem!
Another an African American with a larger hat
than I have on
My name is called out
I would like to tell the interviewer
that I have had 4 poems selected for inclusion
in the NY Times
I douibt he would care
Once when I worked for an executive recruiter
someone - referring to poetry said
"you can eat the paper"
when I let him know I had poetry published
I guess I'll eat the paper
maybe it will be delicous

There was a cute young man
where I worked
Who was buying his
fishing license
And I
so matter o factly
asked him if he wanted
his tramp stamp with that
He quickly chimed in
Let's see
I am going camping
and if I catch a tramp
without the stamp
is the DNR
gonna fine me??

Prices get higher as the years go by
Dream of finding one valued so high
Extremely fine with the perfect gum
