Best Spangles Poems
While whispers shush on sheltered shores, as soon the cockcrow quakes,
the seas descry a skittish sky, sense summer zephyrs wake –
roused passions neath the sunrise pulse, the whitecaps throb and ache.
Along the crests crawl shallow shades the soaring sun effaces
and rains in streams enhance the dreams that fantasy embraces
while ocean sprays of yesterdays reveal forsaken faces.
The midday sun has slowed its run, a shrinking puddle steams,
between the knells of shattered shells drift soaring seagulls’ screams –
the beauty wends but never ends, or so it surely seems.
At dusk a ruddy disk descends, the skyline's furnace burns
and neath the swells where Neptune dwells, an undercurrent churns –
a seahorse hides and seaweed bides until the tempest turns.
While twilight hosts the winds with ghosts of barbed electric spangles,
a mermaid braves the crashing waves adorned with starfish bangles –
her spirit yearns in twists and turns entwined in rockweed tangles.
As seven stranded seamen scan the dimple-dappled moon,
a brace of surly Sirens serenade a lonely loon –
the breakers pound and sometimes sound a melancholy tune.
Soon gales ignite the briny night and rip the skies askew
with zigzag teeth flashed deep beneath a blazing bolt tattoo –
storms, spent, subside in ebbing tides, then all begins anew.

For your (Turkish) Delight party invite
Sweetshop had shut up for the day
The Maltesers decided they were going away
They packed their gear in a Dairy Box
To climb a Glacier called Mint Fox
The sweets were now all wide awake
There was All Sorts of fun to make
The Chocolate Mice ran to and fro
As the Mars Bars to Mothers Pub did go
The Kit Kats spotted the chocolate mice
Who ran circles round the Coconut Ice
The Bounty cried because it was in dry dock
Time showed After Eight on the big wall clock.
The Marathons were training very hard
Some Pear Drops and Spangles standing on guard
The Smarties were looking for a Treet
They moved up market to Quality Street.
The clever Jelly Tots got carried away
Too lazy to walk, they used a Milk Tray
The Dolly Mixtures danced and sang
To All Gold heavy metal music -Bubble Gum went off with a bang.
The Coconut Mushrooms went timid and shy
Wine Gums and Chocolate Buttons looking up to the sky
To see The Sherbet Flying Saucers whizzing around
The Liquorice Torpedoes stayed firmly on the ground
The Jelly Tots decided to loop the loop
Chocolate Cigarettes played Polo20and Hula Hoop
Sherbet Dips joined their friend Liquorice Straw
The Crème Eggs were lying flat out on the floor.
Even the Minstrels loved this free for all party
The Humbugs were picking a fight with a Smartie
But they all agreed a good Feast was had by all
As they danced the night away at the Aniseed Ball.

The drinks were brought before us,
The rusty pretzels dangle,
Tonight we were exquisitely attired,
Long silk threads and spangles!
Tablecloths in toasty ecru,
Flowers floating in water,
Candle holders lending light,
Loose sparkles; no bother!
The band was playing soothingly,
Strings kissing the atmosphere,
Black and white piano keys,
Spreading music, without peer!
Without a perfect spotlight or
Other prominent disclosure,
They entered, sat, and ordered
Something fruity, perhaps ambrosia!
The splits of champagne followed,
They chatted, giggled, and pranced,
The rustle of their dresses,
Caught our attention, as they danced!
Through glints of light
When they returned,
We watched their coming in awe,
Very sure of what we’d see: So attractive!
We dropped our jaws!
As each of their dress folds fell,
Red and green satin covered by lace,
We adjusted our ties and realized,
How elegant their taste!

BUTTERFLY IN TUTU
Butterfly in tutu, deliriously delusional, bright
with spangles, tapping her wings. All knew
she was cocky with glorified golden teeth.
She followed the cockamamie caterpillar
with his root-tootie-toot-toot flute. Thoughts
of mopping up this contest after that
creepy-crawly performance. Her tutu, in
and out, in and out. Her wings of grace
up and down, up and down impeccable.
but the Operettes were up next - they were stars!
Dusk dimmed butterfly’s oscaring, dark
and darker, the glare of stars fell. The iridescent
tutu turned black, she stubbed her wings,
she spun out and crashed, and the audience
laughed……………………instead of hiding
she took a bow

Jewels of Africa.
The saffron Queen spins the lilac sky,
her rays flick crimson cinders into Royal Blue Oceans.
Submerge, sizzle, frizzle...going, going, gone! ...But Not.
Cumulus clouds drizzle pepper fog over pink Flamingos, homeward bound.
Tea-green Botswana bush,
teeny, tiny Hummingbirds hover over brink-pink Balsams,
feast on elixir of nectar.
Royal Albatross rides the last whip of wind.
Sulking Stork swoops through veiled mists above marshy meadow ponds.
Sword sunbeams lash chrome, coppery twilight.
Mooned dusks, a violet cape cloaks bathing blooms.
Nightscape sky sparks, preparing morning’s thin blue...aurora hue.
Camouflaged branches stretch, tickle studded clouds
as ribboned roots cling to crevice homes.
A spook- silver ring appears from nowhere, pearling ripples aluminium.
Beams spill across the sea like lines of glittering fire.
Ethiopian wolves howl composed solos,
phantom echoes shudder Tarantula’s lair
as Flax Lily spurts scent...Frankincense and Lime.
Sultry Savannah’s secrets passed on by rhythmic lip-smacking Baboons,
cracking jokes in the knitted canopy,
teasing and tickling clowning Hyena’s below as
a blinkered platoon of Jet Wood Ants march to their Majesty.
Dawn draws indigo voiles over Nephthys, Goddess of Night
slashes of Sunrise surge shadows as the Bush Lark spangles jewels in the air.
The Alize wind dies in respect to heavenly panorama...
Mountains reflected, seen to be varnished into still, smalt-blue sea.

You are percolating
in many spangles with
visible echo's whelming
and sundrops expressions,
shimmering in...More estatic
than a staccato glowing firework show
coated with fluid inconsistancy.
You're slick with bursts of light
in tones glistening, exciting my vision,
envigeling my eyes with delight
drawing my awareness
to different facets, you squint and
glitter quicker; than all the darlings
on a Hollywood glitterati night.! Copyright Joe Maverick 2011

My dog likes the decorations from the Christmas tree,
He can eat them without any guilt because they are fat free.
He knows which stocking belongs to him and he checks it every day,
He checks it by chewing it up, it’s a game he likes to play.
Sometimes in the candy dish I will find a suspect slobber mark,
I know that he’s been sampling both the milk chocolates and the dark.
He ate a whole roll of wrapping paper the kind with shinny foil,
Then for dessert he had a bow and some curly ribbon from the coil.
He helps us to remember the good times when Christmas time has gone,
When the snow melts in the spring and we find spangles on the lawn.

HUMAN NATURE CONTEST
NATURE AND HUMANITY
There is no beauty like the waterfall
Gushing from the high rock face
Showering its crystal gems in spangles
That the girls would see as your eyes call
To the green lush growth as it dangles
That you are kind and with a trace,
A dash of diffused strength ,your all.
Beneath the water is a ledge
Where you can stand and wonder
At the splish and splash of water
As your toes touch the edge
You are the morning’s daughter
As you are rightly torn asunder
With hope and joy and sprouting sedge
The clouds roll above as a balmy cushion
Sprays gently on the upturned faces
All the rushing waters roar
And speak of an ancient loving passion
Old as the rocks and as young to pour
Mercy and kindness to all bad cases
A drop of loveliness, a just ration.
The clouds gather in a quick momentum
To pelt with justice the mountain side
Bring it lush growth all its days
To a leaping human quantum
Such is balance amid the craze
Of today’s world of time and tide
Sorrows borrowed where you lent them.

Round Up
It's time to do a round up
Not the kind you think you know
These aren't like the ones in movies
You may not want to go
You're up before the sun is
You saddle up to start the day
It may be twenty hours
Before you put your gear away
You don't wear jeans from Macy's
The thickets tear them into strips
Then you've only denim spangles
Hanging off your hips
There's dirt and sand and horse dung
Flying everywhere at speed
Experience, not city dudes
Are the cowboys that you need
You ride off chasing stray ones
You bring it back and start again
This is not for the faint hearted
So, think twice...then think again
Good gloves and ropes are needed
Because at some point you'll be dragged
And you will sleep the sleep of honor
Because at days end....you'll be bagged
They go just where they want to
You just can't steer them from the side
At times they'll bolt on from you
And they'll find quite the place to hide
You better know your horse boy,
How he moves and how he'll run
You'll be working hard together
You two will be as one
The trail boss is much harder
Than any that you've seen
He's a cowboy, base commander
Not like on the silver screen
If you want to be a cowboy
Think real hard, before you pick
Because, it's worse than any theme park
And what you breathe can make you sick
The heat and dust are rampant
The devil gets the wind to blow
He makes it hell for riders
Controlling from hell down below
A round up's not a trail ride
It's a war 'tween man and beast
It's a battle to survive one
And not end up deceased
The elements will get you
The animals will too
So, next time there's a round up
Just what will you do...?

Pocket Money.
.
Pocket money
Was a way of shutting us pesky kids up
At least for the rest of the week
If Mum and Dad
Had the luck
.
Fifty pence
Was quickly spent
Out of one hand into another
A race to the shops
With your blisters or bruver
Straight to the post office
Or beeroff
For a comic
And sweets to scoff
.
Lots of goodies to entice
Comic in your back pocket
Gob full of spice
The corner shop had the lot
There wasn’t much what they
Hadn’t got
.
You felt like a millionaire
For at least two minutes
Then your patched up trouser pockets
Had nothing left in it
.
I always remember the nights
You’d read your comic under the covers
With a torch
After mum had turned of the light
,
The spice we bought were full of sugar
And real sweet
No wonder you got rotting teeth
.
We gobbed down Wagon wheels
Highland toffee palm violets cherry lips
Licorice and sherbet dips
Spangles milky bars wine gums and crunchies
Jelly tots Turkish delight Fruit salads and munchies
Love hearts pink panthers Spanish spice
And white mice were nice
Cola bottles milk bottles space bombs and rollos
Dairy crunch black current lollies candy cigarettes
Mu t imperials barley sweets and polos
And many more
Scoff scoff scoff
Until your gums were sore
.
Bottles of pop
Straight from the shop
Lucazade Lemonade Dandelion and burdock
Pennies for the bottles return
.
Lucky bags with even more spice
And a plastic false moustache
Sweets scoffed money spent
Poor Mum and Dad
Had now
To struggle with the rent.

Free verse
Assailed and held prisoner in my bedroom, I fret
Wondering why mad blood seized my head
Inserting an undue threat
Concealed in the seal of the thread
Running through a bevy of thoughts
Silly at best, folly at worst
Waltzing in my bliss boats in tail coats
As thoughts tumble and fumble at first
Interrogating motives
Banging my head against wintry walls
In ludicrous locomotives
That sprinkle flowers from the cantakerous calls
Whose ringtones break the silence
In the mind in turmoil over expired oil
Flowing and rowing with persistence
In tandem with foot soldiers who toil
To smuggle my remains from the siege
In which flak flies North, East and West
Aiming to smother the last reputation privilege
To which I cling as best as I can in a test
Where frayed nerves hardly endure
As crumbling knock knees plead
For Archangel Michael to ensure
I supplant the wanton weed
That nailed my proclivities into the conundrum
I confront face to face
To the beat of a drowsy drum
Whose cadence faints in the distance with a tame trace
To awaken the conscience in my forsaken shell
Lost in a tangle of spangles
Striving to dispatch my soul to a sinner’s cell
When Jesus dangles triumph triangles
Dragging my spent soul from the pit of despair
In which I couldn’t by my bootstraps
Pull myself to repair the glare and flare
Almost extinguished in wraps
Silken in appearance, earthen in substance
Woven to imperfection as gates of hope snap open
A twenty one gun salute roars to announce
My redemption to the dribble and scribble of an indelible pen.
