She found him in the yellow pages.
"Do you sell pecans?"

"Yes Ma'am, we do."

"I make a killer pecan pie,
how 'bout a trade?"

"You've got a deal."

"I have two,
still warm from the oven."

"I'll take both."

She delivered the pies,
purchased oranges, plums,
pineapple and grapefruit.

She bundled out, arms loaded
with fruit, and all the pecans
previously displayed on his counter.

His voice followed her to the car,
"My favorite is coconut cream,
still warm from the oven."

My Icecream

so smooth you are-
the thought of you soothe's down my throat.
milkshakes, mocha latte's and root beer floats...
baby you are my chocolate chip, you're my honey dip
...and I just love the way your cream is whipped...
butter pecans, hot fudge and caramel
I love your taste and your sweet unforgettable smell...
everytime after tasting you...my mind dwells...
on the rainbow colored sprinkles placed upon you
there's no other flavor I wanna try beyond you...
hot syrup oozing all over you
-no matter cold or hot...you're my fondue
baby you're so good, I want double scoops of you
you chill my body in this heat
my favorite dessert, my favorite treat...
without your taste, I'm incomplete
- you give me this feeling-
I never felt...
and when I have you, my heart just melts
...I'll put you in my icebox to preserve you
you taste so good, sometimes I wonder if I deserve you...
slowly churned, soft served and home made...
...I like many kinds...but you're perfect just the way you're made.
I'll place you in my cone and put a cherry on your top
cause baby you're just like icecream...
good to the last drop!

Premium Member A Pecan Thief

I built a platform between my house and the fence to dry out my pecans.
A squirrel stole some of my pecans and showed no remorse when I caught him.

He continued stealing right before my very eyes as if he had 'a right' to do so.
In fact, he passed within two feet of me, stopped, and stared me in the eye.

Not only did he disrespect me, but he had absolutely no fear of me.
I'm no mind reader, but I was able to read his spirit and bad attitude.

I would venture to say that he was annoyed by me as he said to himself,
"Would you leave me alone, because I'm only trying to feed my family!".

Premium Member The Whittlers

The Whittlers

The stately county courthouse was their usual meeting place,
a columned Greek Revival, and a lovely public space.
They sat upon their benches under lofty pecan trees,
wood shavings on their ankles and some cedar twixt their knees.

Those old boys were called the whittlers, but that was a disguise.
They came to talk of memories and hang out with the guys.
Born long before the TV went and addled peoples wits,
they could tell some stories that would cause your sides to split.

They'd kid me 'bout the pile of books that I had just checked out.
Said I was sure to ruin my eyes and fry my brain no doubt.
But I guess they got a kick out of their young devoted fan,
'cause they'd trot out all their stories and tell them all again.

There were stories of big ranches and oil boom shanty towns,
of work on rigs as roughnecks and touring rodeo clowns,
and how they used to ride the rails when no work could be found.
But the way they spun those stories had me rolling on the ground.

And in between a whittle and another spit and chew,
they showed me how to whet a knife and tie a buckaroo.
Though they had so many stories and lessons to impart,
I'd have to hear the cowboy code before I could depart.

"You give a man a good hard shake and look him in the eye.
If you mess up, tell it straight, never cover with a lie.
Always give a full day's work and live out each day with heart.
A man's no good without his word, so finish what you start.

Protect the weak and help them, and respect your elders, too.
Never leave a friend behind, nothing else will ever do.
And when your days on Earth are done, according to God's plan,
you can face up to the reaper, and meet him like a man.”

If that was all I learned from them, that lesson was enough.
For a kid without some guidance, this life can be quite tough.
Other folks made fun of them, and thought them no account.
For me they were the heroes I would trade for no amount.

The stately county courthouse still stands upon those grounds,
although now those shaded benches are nowhere to be found.
And where once the mighty whittlers carved and held their court,
the squirrels now gather up pecans and chase around for sport.

Am I Nuts?

Chestnuts don’t grow on chests
Walnuts don’t grow on walls
Peanuts don’t come from peas
Cashews come from the fruit on trees
Pecans don’t come from peacock feathers

Pistachios fall from Pinocchio’s nose
Hazelnuts relax in the hazy sun
Macadamias are MacDonald’s big Mac nuts
Almonds are singing nuts, called the Almond Brothers
Acorns come from the unicorns tusk

Nuts are nature’s ways of making sure
We all have a little fun
The biggest nut there ever was
Surely you can see
Is the Nutty Arthur Vaso

Gratitude For Recent Food

Acting on his notion
Of a shorter India route,
Columbus sailed the ocean
And discovered unknown food:

Savory tomatoes
The cornfields of the land,
And tasty sweet potatoes
Delighted western Man.

Shipped to countries yonder,
Peppers stirred sensation
While potatoes eased the hunger
Of poorer populations.

Avocado miracles,
The pineapple marvel,
Bean-pod edibles,
And squashes — were novel.

Flavor-fave vanilla,
Strawberry gems,
Plus chocolate, the thriller
From America, stem.

And peanuts in pods,
Pecans, and cashews….
   Let us thank G-d
   For gifting these foods!

Southern Love Southern Hate

Southern love, Southern hate
they are the opposite of each other
I have memories of both in the State I love dearly.

Going back to a old plantation home in the South ,
as a child I played in the many Pecan trees , collecting baskets upon baskets of fresh pecans .

the smell of fresh pies , of pecan and rhubarb , oh my Mom took the prize .

One afternoon , School was out , it was in summer , reminisce of fresh lemonade
My Mother called my name 'child come in here now " in the middle of the day '
she many times called and I would hide in this paradise full of honeysuckle and pecans .

This time the tone was one of fear , and alert , "come inside Now"
I ran to the top of the old plantation stairs to my Mother .
I saw in the distance what seemed to be a parade in the day .

This time the parade was of people in "white sheets ' going door to door,
just like salesman they would knock , they would greet .
my Mother said " We have no time for this here " leave now , and leave fast. yours is only teachings of Discriminate .

she sent them quickly away , giving back the paper , the invite
These people dressed in funny white sheets .
only later I discovered what this was about
Your Parents do their very best , to keep any Evil out .

These people are not just from the South , they are all over the World
Leaving me that day with no doubt . Make the choice you have , we all do
Remember Gods Children are innocent , and many a color , they could be Blue ~

Premium Member Banana Bread For Breakfast

He mows the lawn,
	doesn't every man?
He mops the kitchen,
	a gift of great value.
He shells pecans,
	saves the pith for me.

He roasts peanuts;
	we love peanuts!
He plants blackberries,
	brings them in a bucket.
He builds bird houses,
	cooks his own suet cakes.

He picks wildflowers,
	shows me where they grow.
He makes up our bed,
	most every day.
He bakes banana bread,
	serves it warm, with coffee.

You will notice, I sometimes
	wear a Cheshire grin.

Moroccan Night.

The genie in the bottle beside Alladin's lamp
awaiting the cue to perform her dance
Aromatic spices fill the air..authentic meals to be my fare.
Tagines of fowl and lamb....fish and yams
Bastille chicken flavored with cinamon, raisins and date palm.
Finely ground walnuts,pecans and such
give flavors ..a mysterious touch.
Walls alive in mosaic designs.....brocaded covered chairs,
vivid colors dazzlingly bright ...... send my mind on a fantasy flight
to Biblical times.

Tamborines and drums...castanets and strings ,
tease the soloist as she sings.......in language strange,
croons an angelic voice...is it
 that of Solomon the king?
The desert draws near .... and there
behold, Moses leading the Israelites...
Noah building his ark.......pairs of animals to be seen
the furious Pharao beside his Egyptian queen.

king solomon himself upon his throne
a solitatry figure as though made of stone.
The Genie dances only as such a one can
with sharp sword balanced atop her head.
Among flying scarves , a dizzying path.....
through tables and chairs she weaves.
Her body a nudge....a tremor...... a blur
 leaves a mysterious afterglow.

Then the music stops.... the scenery fades
Now I'm back to a place that fails to compare
to the distant one I've seen
with Alladin's lamp as my guide ..... a mysterious genie by my side..

Just to let my friends know that this was my experience last night during my
Birthday dinner. We dined at a Morroccan restaurant. a delightful experience it
was.
