You are my hero
by Nathan Stanford
Standing near a Mountain Lake, looking at this peaceful place, focusing across the
crystal clear, where the wind whispers here. The giants pines stand strong and true
just like my feelings for you, As the sun touches down, I hear, the howl of the wolf I
look all around to make sure that I have not been found by that Curious hideous
mysterious hound, even in the moonlight what a beautiful place we have found,
your mother has sent me here with flowers to put upon the ground she is not ready
to come here, she told me to tell you that. But son she longs to hold you and I can’t
blame her for that. Do you remember the time we camped here so many years ago
it is still a beautiful place even with the snow, your brothers from the service were
here the other day, saluted to you with honor and then they were on their way,
they left this flag standing beside you and it proudly flies today, Son you are my
hero, you make us very proud, but it still very hard to put your son in the ground.

(LAMENTATIONS BEFORE DEATH BY A DEPRESSED SON)
YOUR DREAM FOR ME WAS SO DEEP
THAT IS WHY I WAS BORN FOR KEEP.
YOU WANTED ME TO BE A TRUE SON
AND WANTED ME TO SHINE LIKE YOUR SUN-
YOU WANTED ME TO FOLLOW YOUR VALUES;
YOU WANTED ME TO BE IN THE RULES,
AND BE A MASQUERADE OF YOUR OWN
SO THAT YOU BE PLEASED; A SON LONE.
YOU WANTED ME TO BE A CHRISTIAN
AND WANTED ME TO ENTER YOUR TRAIN
OF HOPE AND GOOD LIFE.YES GOOD LIFE.
OH FATHER!HOW I HAVE STRIVED!
I BELIEVE YOU GAVE BIRTH TO THE WORST
OF CHILDREN IN THE MENTAL FROST;
CHILD 'MONG THE WORST, AN ACCURSED.
I AM THAT CHILD WHO IS CURSED-
FORGIVE ME FATHER.I AM SORRY.SORRY .
CAN'T FULFILL YOUR DREAMS;I'M NOT HOLY-
I'M INSTEAD A CHEAT;THIEF,DISGRACE.
I AM A BAD AND BAD FACE-
I AM THAT USELESS SON YOU HAD.
I AM THE BAD CREATURE WITH CRUEL HEART.
FORGIVE FATHER.FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE-
I CANNOT STILL BE YOUR SON;HOW I GRIEVE.
YOU HAVE NO HOPE,DON't DREAM-
YOUR CHILD IS BAD AS ALL SEEMS.
FORGIVE ME FATHER,SWEET FATHER.
GOOD BYE (WEEPS), SORRY FATHER....
You know this town was everything
My momma, my girl
Her diamond ring
From birth though, this was the world
The world, again my everything
I lived my whole life
Anger without fraction
With all the words I said
A tone, but no ration
I just want to have a peace
To settle my mind
One gun shot, bloody weep
didn’t come in time
Like I said to my wife
I destroyed it, last call
I ruined the life
Of my son, dead for all
And even at the end
I still try so hard to stall
God, but where to begin
Just a bullet in my brain
Removing the curse
Chilling the pain
Please better not worse
My son you see
My son knew
Dead nodding at me
Its not true
He no, cant be alive
Its not real, not real
Blast myself inside
He’s so afraid
I know my better
Cursed parade
Boom bloody white sweater
Say that he is he
This is not
Not what I was meant to be
But down, down I go
Gun in hand out the window
I think I should frown
But no, I fall
Fall to my town
My town for all
But am I better dead
Well I think I am
Up metal to head
Against skull a bam
That sound
I hate the scream
Repeated over and over
Wait what, a dream
Oh man, what a day
Or I guess a night
One more check, down hallway
I see sleeping son, blessing sight
The wind is still.
The trees are sad.
The night is dark and solemn.
Our son has come home
in cold whispers and tale.
We saw him leave home to fight.
We sang a song for his homecoming.
We sat around burning logs
to tell his gruesome spear write
the history of our land.
But tonight is different!
It is the ominous voice of the Owl that we hear.
Our men whisper in small circles.
Our women hide behind thatched doors.
Our son is come home a hero
borne on the shoulders,
our his surviving mates.
My big brother is locked away
for taking away a child's innocence
even in prison he can't hide from the shame
it will be something he will always have to live with
I hope he knows that I feel no remorse
and that this poem is just a reminder to myself
of what he would have been able to see
if he hadn't done that deed
He will miss his daughters smiles
and even though he did the damage
he will definitely miss their frowns
I however will always manage
I did without him for years
and incarceration doesn't mean
that I am going to shed any tears
because truthfully he deserves the years
He will miss the liquor bottle
and I know that's not a positive thing
I'm hoping that locking him away will
some how make him clean
He will miss his son
who hasn't yet even turn one
I will miss my nephew because
without my brother the mother won't come
I know he surely missed the altercation
and the way that my family hurt
he missed the disgust on my mother's face
when she found out what her son
was really worth
I know he will miss me
his self proclaimed favorite sister
but I just want to banish him from
my mind, I'd take a pistol to the head
just to delete his memories
If only it didn't end in death
I would contemplate anything to forget
To forget that I care
because even if I bottle it up
these feelings are still there
I can't deny that I love him
or that I worry about his well being
I was the one to always give him
the benefit of the doubt when
no one would hear him
but now I shout
" why did you have to do this"?
you always were a screw up
but this time the metal bars
have clanked down for a while
and you will miss it all
I hope you know this
