Barking at the people who
walk behind our house
is a dog that as a pup
was bought by my spouse.

Tiny border collie mix
he was meant to be,
but a Texas cow dog is
what most people see!

Chocolate-caramel, nutty too,
so it seems just right
he’s named for a candy bar;
just don’t take a bite!

Word Count shows 62 but different at another one. I count 60.

Premium Member Dancing Bird - With Video Link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtpPcmLKRFU Dancing Bird

Yesterday, I saw a shadow dart across my keyboard.
When I turned to look outside the window,
I spied upon a sparrow playing in the sun.
He was dancing in dramatic fashion
Across the shrubbery that was his home.
I could tell it was a male by his markings.
He was busy with his boasting, and proud.
No longer a fledge, he fluffed his feathers
To parade his prowess to all that might adore him.
Then, he pivoted into a pirouette, and pranced
Most skillfully across the length of a branch
And launched himself into flight.

Today, the sounds of birds cackling and chirping
Inside the shrubbery drew me to the window.
I could see three sparrows engaging in some fun and frolic.
Perhaps it was some flirtatious mating ceremony.
While most sparrows do look alike,
I’m sure that one of them was the dancing bird
I’d seen the day before. I watched briefly and smiled,
Remembering my own courtship and rivals
Who would fancy my choice as their own.
I returned to the monitor and before I could begin
My work, there was a loud thud upon the glass.
I gazed outside and there upon the ground was a small hawk
Clutching the dancer in his talons.

Tomorrow, this bird will not dance.
He will not sing or court another.
And as sparrows are many,
I will no doubt find another to enjoy from this vantage.
I chide myself for failing to warn him of the danger.
I was too busy with my own enjoyment to notice.
Now, I close my eyes and reconstruct those moments
As I attempt to resurrect the dancing bird,
And preserve him....forever.

Premium Member 'that Missing Link'

One day after years of searching
for that missing link
he came along, without warning
he meddled with the barricades
I build...

The things I used to protect myself,
fragile me, all exposed
and yet
the steps we took healed us both...

Not realizing that every day
our dependence on others
for validation were being cut away
not knowing we were on a journey
of discovery of who we are
without faceless crowds
dictating our behavior...

I've learned to love myself
I've learned to love others again
without the fear of losing them,
I've learned to be happy
without being afraid
that something sinister might happen

we've grown together
and we have grown apart
but we are always in each other’s hearts

Even though we're miles apart
our paths have been cemented...

Connections remain even distance can't separate...

It's a friendship
 you don't ask questions about
it’s a friendship you nurture.

Not because you are forced to,
But because it’s the one thing
That has kept us centered
and made me embrace
who I really am…

I will always be thankful for you…

Premium Member The Last Link To Being-The Tale of Ribonucleotides-

I curse thee ribonucleotides
For to shatter my faith was your goal
and the spec of light I held inside
You've replaced with a vacuous hole

For science has proven beyond any doubt
That you came to exist on your own
Elements melded in perfect conditions
The recipe is finally known

These roots of life have been made in a lab
and they needed no ethereal spark
I close my eyes and try to forget
But there is no return to the dark

I'm stuck on this rock, what reason to be?
In the truth there exists no compassion
I curse thee ribonucleotides
and this empty heart that you've fashioned

The Broken Link

On sleepless nights I am led
To creep and kneel by your bed
To pray for your mother and me
But grief comes calling you see
Gurgling from its endless base
It explodes out of my face
I shower your pillow with tears
Gagging on primal fears
Barking and spitting his rage
The monster howls from its cage
Backing me out to the edge
Of insanity's slippery ledge

The cord is severed I think
That unseen biological link
Has ripped loose down at the loins
And the wound bleeds from my groin
Like frayed rope snapping on a boat
The mangled end quivers and floats
Out in an endless abyss
Where my demons cackle and hiss
I rant, I plead and I pray
Still you keep drifting away
Hold on, I am with you my son
So tired, let go, it is done

Premium Member A Living Link

The wind wailed, and I could hear the trees cry;
as I approached the scar of a clear cut.
No birds were on the ground or in the sky,
it resembled a killing field somewhat.

Before me lay the bleached bones of dead trees;
abandoned limbs, a woodsman's axe hacked off.
And stumps of a forest felled to its knees;
while locals protest and profiteers scoff.

Old-growth forests get harvested at length,
and soon, they will disappear forever.
These trees lend the Native people their strength;
a living link, we've no right to sever.

As this clearcut drew a tear from my eye,
the wind wailed, and I could hear the trees cry.

Missing Link

Another Dawn light awakens me
to face another day
To live my life and learn from it
in every single way
The children hold tomorrow
in hopes & dreams & tears
The world depends on children
to overcome its fears
Although we want to hide away
tomorrow may not come
And anything the past has hurt
has been already done
No changing of the present
the past has all now gone
We only have the future
to overcome as one
And in this world
I need not more than you
For without your love in my heart
it would be torn in two
So when your found say to me
that never you will leave
And in your eyes I'll see your love
and therefore will believe
For its from you my brother
I wait to fill the missing link
To show you who I am
and how I really think
For me to give you
the flower of love
Is what I really need
Then we can start our lives together
Once we've planted that seed

Jim Link - 3 Years On

I
Jim was the archetypal Mensch
We loved writing, Greenbelt MD, Jesus

II
At the edge of my tears
I could sit, daydream, make monuments with words
The Hindu soul within my Soul
Had adored weaving flowers for Jaggan
Whose mom died while he was the driver
Our ancestors will gladly bequeath garlands
Tropical and exotic strelitzia and protea
But you and I are forever in another lineage
The eternal family through a lamb, Jesus

Premium Member Eddie Claimed To Be a Cowboy - With Video Link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-KFwPNkS6U

Eddie was a braggart,
At least we thought as much.
His lower lip was loaded,
A three finger dip of snuff…
My mind said, “I think not.”

And he claimed to be a rider,
Bragging of his chaps.
Black leather with blue fringes,
Sportin’ bunnies on the sides.
Said he’d show us all someday…
My mind said, “I think not.”

He was bow-legged as he stood,
Like he’d been upon a bronc.
But when the braggart claimed
He could chug a quart o’ beer…
My mind said, “I think not.”

The day came that we saw his prize,
The heralded leather chaps.
He treated them like china
In that tissue paper wrap.
Did that mean he could ride?
My mind said, “I think not.”

Eddie had no money,
So we anteed up his mount.
And when they called his number,
He strapped on spurs and chaps.
Then, loaded up another
Three finger dip of snuff.
Is this how cowboys do it?
My mind said, “I think not.”

He climbed the fence and lowered himself
Aboard a mad black mare,
Screwed his left hand in the riggin’
Threw his right hand in the air,
And said but one word softly,
“Outside!"
I’m glad that I was there.
That mare pitched to and fro.
He spurred her when she grounded,
Then with all four in the air.
And when the buzzer sounded,
He threw his right boot over
Landing both boots on the ground.
Is this how cowboys do it?
The other boys had not!

He folded up his chaps
Before he took a step,
And walking to the announcer’s stand
 “Where’s my cash?” He quipped.

That night in celebration,
Eddie chugged a quart o’ beer
With three finger dip in place!
I'm proud that I was there.
If that’s how cowboys do it,
Then I’ve met one,
Face to face!

Premium Member Missing Link In the Food Chain

All around us
It’s an epidemic
Man-induced plague

It’s a conspiracy
To hook people
To non food foods
Eats that should be
Technically inedible

Anything to grease the wheel
Of factories and consumerism
Nothing grown naturally
Nothing from a farm
Heavens no

Promoting foods whipped up
From powders and chemicals
None of those
Vegetables or fruits
Or other live stuff

Let the population thrive
On plastic derivatives
Deceitfully charming
Taste buds everywhere

Inducing dependency
Decomposing corpses wandering
Like loose time bombs
Waiting to explode

The Broken Link

(In memory of Nigeria-Biafra War)

We called on him.
 In vain he answered us.
He had died at dusk.
 And the night passed unsung

We didn’t sing the moonlight songs
Never sang merry-be-my-friend again.
Only the leaves above rustled,
Singing mutely to the patched moon above

And the link was cut and broken at dusk.
We mourned the night passed unsung.
Only night beings hummed songs that
 Rose above Rooftops, and away
Into the nights.
Soon his mother’s sobbing receded
As night’s winds lured her to sleep.

Above, the sky wore patches of mangled
Cloud. Lucifer was there casting
Lots for the nations on the Niger.
Doom had overtaken our innocence.

Soon the airplane came, rumbling noisier than
Her usual gentle flight.
Sparks of suppressed play zests unwound in us.
We rushed to the open to shout her farewell
To the unknown.
It was bombs and explosions shattered us all.
Since then, we never sang
Merry-be-my-friend again nor
Fared well to the airplane.

Premium Member The Mind-To-Mind Link

She stood there, by the roadside;
eyes of obsidian,
framed in wispy lashes.
I was certain that she’d run
onto the crowded interstate.
The closer that I got, the more intense,
my neck muscles, grew.

In my mind, I visualized her,
leaping back into the woods.
I prepared to pull over,
but no one else was doing that for a deer,
I felt; at any rate,
I would not be dining on road kill tonight
and I hoped that, no one else would.

Go back into the woods, baby;
over and over I thought
and visualized her graceful rebound.
I drew closer, prepared to pull of onto the gravel;
I would not let her beauty be spoiled.
Tension turning neck and shoulders steeled,
I chanted my mantra…”go back…go back, baby”,..

Her soft, brown head turned, to look at me;
an instant glance,
confirmed that she’d received my message;
as she bounded back to the safety of her wood.

The focused mind, can work small miracles;
More than one life, was spared, that day.

Missing 'Link'

I first met him in July, seventeen years later
I was shocked to see how much he looked like his maternal uncle
So nothing like me except, maybe, the eyes...yeah, the eyes
"Hi, Alex, I'm Jim." We shook hands and I pulled him into an "ambush" hug
"You can blame your aunt for this", I whispered in his ear
"She made me PROMISE that I would" I said out loud
We jabbered like two magpies the 60 miles home
I started to realize we had many of the sames tastes AND views
We had never known each other; I was never involved in his development
His mom and stepfather were my polar opposites in every aspect
Somehow, two divergent paths had met in the middle to find so much common ground
I started to realize my absence hadn't done as much damage as I had thought
He was cool about it... he put me at ease... he was already a man!
He met the rest of my crazy clan over the next 12 days and survived them all
He seemed, to me, like he had found some sort of missing link in his life
Like some puzzle piece had been put right
He vowed to return permanently after graduation, and he really means it
He also vowed to have his first name legally changed to "Link" upon turning 18
A truer Zelda fan I've not met
I am still trying to get used to it, but I support it 100%
We chat at least weekly via the internet, making small talk here and there
It fills some of the void, but it's not enough.......

      And I find myself......
                                   Missing Link..............
