Premium Member The Poet Who Never Was

I thought I was a poet who had a pen of gold
With clear access to writing that was mature and bold.
I thought I could go roaming beside the foaming sea
And watch the seagulls gliding to give a show for free.

I thought I was a poet who walked along the beach
In awe I stood and wondered, my hand stretched out to reach
The silver thread dividing the water from the sky
And traced Selena’s features as slowly she went by.

I thought I was a poet who knew what joy could be
On hearing water roaring cascading down with glee.
I looked for inspiration, experienced utmost thrill
When climbing down the valley or up the verdant hill.

I thought I was a poet in charge of heat and cold
But lost my true emotions when I was duped and told
I had to reach perfection to please my heart and mind
By means of imitation. My soul I left behind.

I thought I was a poet who had a pen of gold
But now all of a sudden I’m weary, frail and old.
I thought I was a poet. My pen is of no use.
With teary eyes I whisper to my dejected muse.

Premium Member Oceana

Oceana

Oceana flings her sequined petticoats
Upon the sands as if to toss the seaweed
From the swirling edges
While she dances with the wind
With each turn she swings her skirts
In thunder
As she passes – faster, faster -
Until her laughter foams upon the waves
And in the early midnight dawns
She turns to cover up
Her turquoise evening gown
With capes of fog so thick
The soaring gulls seem to carry
This her summer train
To quickly change into a dress of silver satin,
Bound with trims of frothy sprays,
Rising and swelling,
When morning reaches for windy afternoons,
She teases sudden lightning outbursts
Leaving behind upon the outstretched strands
A foaming lace of pearls
That decorate her new rippling dress
Of brilliant sapphire blue
Drawing it around the world in flowing currents
To follow, ever follow, the lilting music
Of her lover moon,
Softly singing enchanted melodies,
Ever beckoning his earthbound bride unto himself
To watch her gaily waltz upon the rolling seas
Circling to his rune.

Fireflies

It's so dark outside, my eyes can't distinguish where sand meets water. Somehow, dusk has come and gone, plunging the evening into darkness.

But even as my eyes yield to this opaque absence of light, my other senses heighten. I can hear the crash of waves as they abuse the shoreline, sending foaming water up the beach in icy streams. I'm lulled by the sound of polished pebbles colliding like marbles as they recede with the waves. I can feel the sea's cool mist against my face, taste its salt on my lips. The scent of seaweed drifts on the breeze in gentle wafts - and then, slowly, the faintest whiff of smoke.

I glance over my shoulder, where a tiny dot of light penetrates the darkness. It's a beacon on this cool night, and I walk slowly toward it, digging my toes into the soft sand with each step.

dim moonlight
peeks through thinning clouds--
fire crackles

He's still there, stoking the fire, feeding the flames until the heat is tangible. The air wavers between us like a veil - a line I want to cross. He stirs up clouds of smoke, stirring feelings within me as I watch his busy hands. I wait patiently for him to notice my approach, and when he does, my breath catches.

rainbow flames
burst from seasoned maple--
blue eyes sparkle

I watch golden light flicker across his skin, softening the lines of his face. He abandons his task, moving around the fire until he stands before me, smiling as if he knows my heart is thundering in my chest.

He waits for a painstaking moment to pass. Then he kisses me with toasted marshmallow lips, pulling me down into his lap to watch the sparks rise like fireflies into the breathless night.

What Holds More Resplendent Gifts Of The Great And Vast Beyond

Seas of poetry orations, I once took my swims
being strong in spirit, stouter in heart and lithe of limbs
What dread had I of illness or passage of Father Time
when great beauty of verse sang so deep, dancing in its rhyme
Waves of its amber grains, its sandy beach, its great pleasures
stirred heart, pleading soul in immeasurable measures!

If tired, I cast myself upon lands flowing true and fair
seeing magnificence in Earth, Life, Nature- everywhere
Before dawn, before slumber flees this soul's poetry dreams
of paradise shores, poetic thoughts, soft cast golden beams
Winds of change and sublime words to describe and thus to match
castles of hope, beauty's grace and golden eggs- set to hatch!

Fearing not of, high flying fancies and heavenly flights
of lost romantic desires, cast adrift on stormy nights
Or that of abandoned ships left behind in gleaming seas
for poetry gifts its love and blessings of granted pleas
Bountiful harvests of word-seeds so pleasurably sown
are but summer days sending cool winds so gratefully blown!

What holds more resplendent gifts of the great and vast beyond
than poetry, its powers, which poets are so very fond
How its paintings, colors memories one sweetly recalls
of life, living and flames of hot-romance youth often falls
Beyond poetic seas of white-cropped waves and foaming foam
may this old poet's soul, in death, forever gaily roam!

Robert J. Lindley, 12-03-2018
Rhyme, (Inspired verse) (Poetry is Life and Treasure too)

Note- I dedicate this poem to my very good friend Susan Ashley and her wondrously inspiring new poem that inspired me to write this today.
Her new poem titled, The Red Leaf- set me to thinking of its beautiful poetry
and life. And how much poetry means to so many dedicated and in love with poetry poets!
I sat down and this flowed right on out, early this morn.

Note: Use in my poem of "white-cropped" = "white" for good, "cropped" for "appearing unexpectedly".
Thus translated- beyond poetic seas of = unexpectedly good waves and foaming foam.

As the never world awaits me,
The lord darkness, his cloak now draped.
Haunting images that appear in dreams,
Invade the subconscious, till again I wake

Complative thoughts well before the dawn,
I walk the morning shore,
How many have stood on these same sands,
Reflecting the echoes of those no more.

And still the waves they pound the shore,
Relentless in their quest,
As they crash on the rocks with deafly roar,
White tipped and foaming zest.

Dawn breaks with gilded cotton clouds,
Waiting like courtiers to their king.
Gathering round the sovereign sun,
Bestowing his warmth on everything.

Would that life compare to the shore,
All worries get washed away.
Cares thrown to the four winds,
As on my knees I pray

Premium Member Engelbert Effleflump For Dr Seuss Contest

Engelbert Effleflump put on his disguise
Climbed in his orcetector and rose in the skies

For his mum hated flying and must never know
That Engelbert’s job was in an aerial show

Poor Engelbert hated deceiving his mother
He’d go out of the house under cloud cover

He’d loop the loop in pink polka dot skies
Twirling in his orcetector each time he flies

Over mountains of candy and lollipop trees
Floating on green clouds and lemonade seas

Only children knew his secret, they’d point with delight
Look there goes Engelbert - he’ll be home by midnight!

But disaster happened on one foggy day
Poor Engelbert crashed at a flying display

He was not badly injured - only his pride
But how could he tell his mother he’d lied

Unable to continue flying he told his mum of his work
When she discovered his secret life, she went BERSERK

She shook her gold furry arms high in the air
Now confined to his room Engelbert did despair

Engelbert begged and he pleaded, but she wouldn’t listen
Tears formed in his orange eyes, oh how they did glisten

That night he decided that he must simply be free
Couldn’t live with his mother – how they did disagree

Next morning he munched on his wigglerly grub
Drank his foaming juice from the chocberry shrub

He announced to his mother that he had a plan
We would get a new job, become a delivery man

Engelbert moved into a chocolate house
He lives there with his purple pet mouse

His new job lets him work at his own pace
Delivering dreams to Effleflumps in outer space

* an orcetector is a word that was made up by the little girl I used to be a private nanny to - she was just 2 years old and she couldn't say helicopter.

After a long and stressful day
Running the bath and adding scented oils
Watching the bubbles foaming and frothing
Climbing into the deep soapy suds
Sensational scent of lavender rises
Relaxing in the steamy atmosphere
Blissfully all my troubles melt away
Drying myself in a soft warm fluffy towel
Climbing into freshly laundered sheets
Sheer bliss!

Premium Member I Wish

I wish I were an angel
To flood your world with my light
To hold, comfort and cheer you
All through long lonely night

I wish I were a fairy
To flit about your dear heart
To give it tiny squeezes
When about to fall apart

I wish I were a goddess
Of beauty a paragon
So you would gaze and wonder
Thoughts of any other gone

I wish I were a muse
Living there inside your mind
To offer inspiration
When right words you need to find

I wish I were a princess
Blessed with luxury so fine
I’d make you live in splendor
If you promise to be mine

I wish I were a star
Sprinkling stardust down on you
Guiding each and every step
Make your dearest wish come true

I wish I were the moon
Working on your inner tides
Drawing you ever closer
Till in me your love abides

I wish I were the sun
Burning to the very core
Searing you with my passion
Rays touching what I adore

I wish I were a flower
To bloom nurtured by your care
Wrap you in my loving scent
Make life beautiful and fair

I wish I were the wind
Caressing you every way
Enfolding you in my arms
Seductress having my way

I wish I were the rain
That wets body through and through
That sprinkles love droplets soft
But then drums itself on you

I wish I were the sea
Foaming, churning ecstasy
To draw you into my depth
Riding waves, unleashed and free

But I am just a woman
I’m as simple as can be
But if you give me your love
All these wonders you will see

Premium Member The Sea of My Life

The Sea of My Life
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The heaving waves are rising
Each foaming at the crest
For them there is no rest
They go to any length
To give a show of strength.
		It’s the sea of my life where no mercy is shown
		Dangers are hiding in corners unknown.
		I stand for my freedom; will not be a slave.
                It’s time to be counted. It’s time to be brave.
For me this is the moment
To save my place on earth
To prove what I am worth
Because I’m in the right
I will put up a fight.
		It’s the sea of my life where no mercy is shown
		Dangers are hiding in corners unknown.
		I stand for my freedom; will not be a slave.
                It’s time to be counted. It’s time to be brave.
Let the water keep on turning
Let it rage and swirl and pound
For tomorrow when it’s dawning
It will die without a sound.
		It’s the sea of my life where no mercy is shown
		Dangers are hiding in corners unknown.
		I stand for my freedom; will not be a slave.
                It’s time to be counted. It’s time to be brave.
                It’s the sea of my life where no mercy is shown
                Dangers are hiding; I face them alone.
                I stand for my freedom and fight what is wrong.
                It’s time to be daring. It’s time to be strong.
Premium Member Unrequited
Unrequited
The things i think about,
never settle below
they float instead
and fester inside
as I pluck your name in the air
a sacred memory folds over
foaming layers, floating vapors
Creating a chill and then a stupor
the last draw of my breath
I slipped again, I stripped
you tripped in the end
Even if you stay in your lane
But you’re driving insane
so much distance between two cars
its impossible to hear
Muffled by the wind, carried away the fear
I tried to speak, but the sound
Never carried over
It rises an ache in my throat
nerves are calmed, noise is stifled
legs are stiffened, feet planted
hands firmly gripped
elbows abutted
in a world prone to forget
my memory stays etched
in your fractured mind
my taste stayed on the lips
of the one I've left behind
a fleeting moment
Betrayed by lust unveiled the trust
between the blinks of my eye
You remain a distant memory
The pain has abated
the speed is indeed fleeting
Forgotten with the past
in the throes between two fires
the faded lines, the dying embers
Looms over like the sun
So I say, you cannot stay
Isn’t that off-putting?
A broken soul
With a spirit so agile
My body so fragile,
with just one touch,
you peel my layers
like the sprouting weeds
between the pavement
the truth wants to be known
My touch so brief,
and yet it lingered
Overstayed its welcome
And in the horizon
It stretched, it lagged on
And with your imagination
My skin rubbed raw,
My voice cracked, I cringed
I become unhinged
My heart will always be disquieted
Your love forever unrequited
Premium Member Thundering Falls
Whirling, whirling, whirling along distinctive paths
originating somewhere farther back, beyond the crest. . .
foaming frenzied water (once but mere faint streams
as placid as our souls before we met)
now travels faster, faster,
gaining in strength and intensity.
Beneath the glow of an amber moon,
we, young lovers, lie where we have fallen
in this jasmine-scented night.
In our rapture, we hear the rushing streams converge
and make their sudden dip.
Thundering, thundering, the frothing water falls. . .
Our hearts, like the streams,
have become as one,
pounding, pounding. . .as the beautiful cascade
plunges
plunges
resounding endlessly inside our heart and mind
this splendid night.
I sit in stillness
framed by glass
the world outside dances
sunlight spills like golden honey.
yet within these walls I stay.
regret coils.....
around me tight as a noose
lurking in shadows.
I breathe in
inhaling the vastness of
the ocean's essence.
I can feel it
my heart beats.....
steady as stone.
I glance out and see
islands shimmering like dreams…..
clouds lazily drift by.
like ghostly albatrosses.
heavy with the mental wobbling weight
of untold excruciating hours
spent in despair.
I can hear
waves hum their foaming forgotten lullabies.
spilling secrets from the depths.....
beneath the starlit sky
I sail on
gliding over waveless waters
alone in the stillness of the night.
the salt air mingles with my thoughts
hope burns
a flicker caught in the tempest howl
distant as fires beyond the glass
a pleading prayer goes unanswered.
I gaze at
the world, so alive.....
filled with laughter and song.
joy drifts in like soft misty mist
but raw regret tugs at my heart.
snowflakes fall quietly.....
silence calls.
then Darkness Descends.
Draping the earth in it’s shadowy spell.
Dancing, Drumming, Devouring.
hope's last flicker Dies…..
echoes of a Dying breath
chaos reigns supreme.
I feel frozen
in this shattered world
where cracked glass bites into
my dreams.
I’m helpless.
I am a silent witness
to a dying light.
I find myself fractured like
just like the life
I let slip away.
I’m the voyeur of lost tomorrows.
their cost carved deep into
the marrow of my soul
a sentencing weight I’ll carry forever.
An Endless Sea of Love
~
My life is but a leaf atop an ocean flowing bliss,
on waves of firm conclusions built on reasons that I miss
I take each day as it does come in mystic falling beams
to fill the many corners of my multicolored dreams
Up and down in freedom form the open waters dance,
smooth the real transition to the tremors of romance
Vast the far horizons come to choose what they may show,
as I rest so peaceful within southern breezes flow
Timeless counted visions that do soar about my mind,
pictures painted perfect of the wisdom I might find
Stories told that hold the thoughts in words another writes,
entertainment spawned of many days and many nights
Now I float upon these waves, a far off distance shore,
to hold the one of wondrous grace my heart it does adore
I shall come a calling on the eve of loving ways,
to know in calculation we have reached eternal days
Adrift among the numbers of the minutes that we see,
the tide shall come a waning as the moon brings you to me
Beneath these stars of evermore which brightly shine aglow,
sending forth the message of a truth you long to know
Lift me now my angel from this aqua blue marine,
gently for to cradle in this moment found serene
Of this golden fantasy I come to see it’s true,
this love that I’ve been waiting for lies in the heart of you
So here along the foaming frame, an outline of the beach,
to know time is the student of the hours that we teach
I spend my life in harmony beneath blue skies above
and share my world with you upon an endless sea of love
Premium Member The Queen of Hearts
The beloved Queen of Hearts was a merry queen, who'd ever loved to bake;
Like confetti midnight stars, sparkling; or the yellow, noon sun, wide awake.
She baked myriad varieties of cookies, and delicious pies of different kinds;
And also scrumptious cakes, so divine. Like pure gold, tinted rainbows find.
The king had a cheerful disposition, too, but betimes could be quite stern;
Like the scarlet blossoms, which fail to thrive, before floriculture is learned.
Faithful friends became part of the many faceted court, like tinted bubbles,
Fancy dressed, and as vital to royal felicity, as a jade rose, with no troubles.
Forthright family were familiar at court, in the fleet, peregrine falcon days,
Fast-forwarding to fabled, fruity tomorrows, and to fitful, spiced, solar rays.
They lived in the house of green ivied walls, in the royal, emerald summer;
When golden sun visited almost every room, eager to touch a world of color.
Silver maples touched sapphire skies, on their street of red, sweet Williams,
Edged by creamy sand, where the surf came, onto teal, foaming, pavilions.
Nighthawks and wild wood anemones, were neighbors, bestowed by nature;
In nameless, never-ending, silvery hours. Red butterflies, loved floral flavors.
Heart tomatoes adored the orange sun, when wood ear mushrooms listened;
And Canterbury Bells plants were ringing, by roses whereon dews glistened.
Toad lilies stared in bug-eyed fascination, at the searing season of surprises;
And Billy Button blooms were getting dressed, as skies split in colored slices.
'The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, all on a summer's day;' a Friday.
But alas, 'The Knave of Hearts, he stole the tarts, And took them clean away.'
When purple even arrived, 'The King of Hearts called for the tarts,' in a roar.
The lad relished sweets, but the king was mad, 'And beat the Knave full sore;'
'The Knave of Hearts brought back the tarts, And vowed he'd steal no more.'
The kindly queen quietly quipped, 'After all, the boy has never stolen before!'
The King of Hearts was returned to good humor, and that lad kept his word;
And was back in favor, like pink spring tulips, or a song of blue mockingbird.
