Best Dragonflies Poems

Premium Member Dragonflies Dancing

Sunlight sparkles on the shimmering pond
its mirror like surface smooth as silk
dragonflies dance across the water
performing aerial acrobatics like a circus in the air

Water dipping on a fairground ferris wheel
then plunging dramatically like a helicopter in free-fall
rising and falling skimming the water so gracefully
transparent gossamer wings flapping in flight

Shimmering like a sapphire in the early morning sun
dazzling me with your infinite beauty
On summer days I wish I had wings
seeing dragonflies’ dancing makes my heart sing

This is one of my early poems and it is a particular favourite as I tried very hard with the imagery

Dancing Dragonflies

I watched them across the water prance,

Back and forth in sprightly dance.

Liveried in emerald green, others had a sapphire sheen.

It was natural choreography, by tiny acrobats

As they hovered through the reed beds, hunting bugs and gnats.

A mastery of flight, a ballet in the sky,

How mesmerising to sit and watch, dancing dragonflies.

Premium Member Orchard of Dragonflies

The sky scatters pixie dust~
across orchards of dragonflies;
while in sunflowers, the stars do trust,
tracing tales through kohl-lit eyes.
A fairy cloaked in soft florals~
fragranced moon-mists and rhinestone rust.
But within veins of golden corals,
she weaves hope with saffron crust.

swarm of dragonflies
cascading on quiet lake---
    burst of hues explodes

perched on grass' easels
crepe wings swoop on irises, reeds---
    ballet of light twirls

Where Dragonflies Alight

It was a long hike before they reached the campsite,
and sunlight was fading with the slight threat of rain.
Mandy was weary and Jeff's mood was quite dreary.
There was much yet to prepare before dark of night.
Tents needed raising, then fire and food to prepare.
Labors completed by the bright glow of moonlight.
Mandy gathered dry kindling while Jeff found water,
near a stand of cattails where dragonflies alight.
Gazing at the laggard walk of a red capped crane,
Jeff's mood was quite dreary, and Mandy was weary,
'til scared by trumpets of the sandhill crane in flight.

STEEL AND SILK

My love like steel and silk
      cuts through you
            splutters your blood
                watermelon juice down a throat

Wipes it with yellow silken ribbon
             for you to suck afresh
                  that you may find your
                                 Godly seed within

My love like dragonflies and bees
silently landing on stamen or pistils
                alchemising nectar into patterned
                                dust upon transparent wings

Earth rewards my love with morning glory
       steel severs sunflower stems
silkworms crawl into a wet rose centre
                              pollen stolen in sparkling dew

My steely silken love refreshed
                     from your flowered stickiness

I went to my garden this morning for this is where I meditate
and was dazzled by the beauty that I have created
from nothing there is this magical place that I can step into
where flowers sway like sparkling jewels in the breeze
the orange, coral, red, pink, fuchsia, yellow, white and purple
of petunias, geraniums and wildflowers drip colors sublime
where sparrows, cardinals and yellow warblers sing
and bees buzz happily and blue dragonflies small and mighty linger
where butterflies dance and spin and green hummingbirds flutter
and lush emerald mingles and vines cascade reaching out for me
oh, there is such a tranquil feel that sometimes it overwhelms me
faith must have moved my hands in planting this garden sanctuary
and each day I give all the flower petals and green hued leaves
loving caresses and praise their beauty with kisses ...

I was a broken man, down on my knees
Traveling on a train to nowhere;
A troubling, endless journey;
Through worry, pain and hardship.
Then one day,
The conductor came to me and said, “Son, it’s time to get off the train”.

Heathers and dragonflies were all around me
Relaxing my mind and helping me see
From dusk to gleaming of splendid stars
These pineland muses supported me far
So were gathered my family and all of my friends
As they have been with me from beginning to end
Amongst rocks, around bushes and through branches of trees
The heathers and dragonflies were all around me

I am now a sturdy man, standing head held high;
Supporting a family of many;
I work two jobs, raise my kids
And keep a good home.
Then early today,
My wife came to me and said, “Please go out back and tend the garden”

Heathers and dragonflies are all around me
Touching my soul and letting me be
From dusk to gleaming of splendid stars
These pineland muses support me hence far
So gather my family and all of my friends
As you have been with me from beginning to end
Amongst rocks, around bushes and through branches of trees
The heathers and dragonflies are all around me

I’ll be an elder man, aged with golden grace;
Poised on a bench wrought by wisdom.
A history of peace, love and fulfillment,
Will ease me through my slowing times.
One day future,
Good father will come to me and say, “Your resting place shall bring you peace.”

Heathers and dragonflies will be all around me
Warming my spirit and setting me free
From dusk to gleaming of splendid stars
These pineland muses will have supported me far
So will gather my family and all of my friends
As they’ll be with me from beginning to end
Amongst rocks, around bushes and through branches of trees
The heathers and dragonflies will be all around me

cabernet and dragonflies -
   red and green fireworks
      flitting about tall trunks;
the woods is dark. patio lit
with tea lights, amber and ebony.
pink-crèpe jellyfish, in uttermost twilight,
   suspended from jumbo umbrella.
breadsticks, like twigs, snap; several
   copious charcuteries.
flickering fate, speed of light
   of wedding tale, ancestry
      of one hundred years
will sail by in a nod,
but this eve is once upon a time,
merely the engagement.

~Beautiful Dragonflies~
(American 767)

Dragonflies are odonata
they have close large eyes
bigger than the damselflies

Have slender bodies two wings
Variety numerous
they eat other small insects

Attack small fish and tadpoles
eat mosquitos and midges
they live in diverse biotope

Some are found in ponds and swamps
Prefer to live in wetlands
Some live in lakes acidic bogs

Male grasps the head of female
Sperm transfer fertilizes eggs
Some female lays eggs alone

Eggs dropped in aquatic plants
or directly in water
Some larvas stage in ponds marshes

When ready to change into adult
They climb out of the water
Shed skin become dragonfly

Dragonflies are unique insects
Colorful beautiful
Adults can live up to two months
