Best Aphids Poems
In a province exploited
by prejudiced seasons,
a minority ebony rose
is taunted by prominent
i v o r y l i l i e s.
Biased blossoms ridiculing
tones of its charcoal petals,
yet blooming in the same
quilt of soil as each other.
Soothing raindrops
never discriminate though,
as scents of petrichor
fuse with floret elegance,
nor does the sun only shine
for the privileged,
as all flora sunbathes in
the passions of its rays,
refreshed by the same
migrating gentle breeze.
Scarlet beetles
munch upon lily leaves,
whilst aphids suck
upon rose sepals.
Creepy crawlies
unconcerned with
a p p e a r a n c e,
massacre and spread
like an epidemic.
Until the arrival of
feathered immigrants,
who feast upon an
assortment of morsels.
In any garden,
birds care not for
whom they sing.
They defecate on all flowers,
aware all will wilt eventually.
Winter frost oppresses
regardless of culture,
so birds flee.
But, when roses crumble,
they re-emerge
fresher and brighter,
as their red thorns remain
protecting their right
to flourish freely under
fresh blue skies..

In early morning light I wheel myself outdoors. The vibrating air lively with small dancing aphids. In distance near, that booming sound of crashing waves against the sand, waves with their perpetual wish to walk the shore. Waves, so powerful, so strong yet so dumb, a caged animal wanting to escape. I want to escape the prison that sometimes is me, but not now. The air is fresh, the light is sharp, the wind brings longing and the salty fragrance of jelly fish in their frail beautiful dance in water, so plump and sorrowful in death on the shore.
waltz in ozone sun
song of life and love in blue:
waves of soothing sea
The beach also represents my love for dance and motion in harmony with nature, The evening light with its orange colours chant words without speech, that only need to find their way into sentences, born in movement. Stars and nightly black guide thoughts into music, where I see me dance the way I once did.
soft water ripples
around the wheels, inviting
to dance forever
I write down images in sophisticated colours, the eternal dance of fragile mentality, and physical injury, seated here, in the evening shade. Slowly darkness sends away the tangerine sky, covering me with a blanket of warm yellow, and small smithereens of starlight. A myriad specks reflected in the soothingly speaking sea that nibbles at my feet in tender kisses of friendship.
musical shower
courage in frail harmony,
water in motion.

In the Garden...
Sometimes
in the garden,
if you are quiet,
and watch carefully;
there are birds.
They come to visit,
and listen to the trees.
They sing in unison
to the leaves,
and the movement
of the grass.
The song is not easy to hear,
but if you let,
your heart...
it will match the beat,
and you will feel the miracle.
They...
all of them...
Come to visit the flowers,
and be part of the picture,
that makes everything perfect.
There are bees,
that kiss the blossoms,
and tell stories to the gnomes.
Ladybugs that dance among the roses,
and eat the aphids.
They laugh in celebration,
of the most beautiful buds,
ever allowed to open,
and smile at the sun.
The court of the big tree,
the land of the green,
the lake brought by irrigation,
a reality of everything,
truly...
lovely.

Lady Bird
Though not a lady
nor even is she a bird
But she's the most
exquisite beauty
ever seen
though never heard
Her coat of ruby red
‘tis almost designer
one could have said
With small black polka dots galore
This gorgeous creature I adore
Sometimes she walks across my floor
Multi-talented this gal in red
flying on hidden wings out spread
The dots upon here ruby coat
Some say will tell her age
This is untrue
It tells her species
For there are very many
A beauty in red
Impossible to perceive
an insect is she
a beetle I believe
One of five thousand species
munching aphids she sees
for breakfasts
for dinners
and even for teas
This lady in red
she is so well fed
Farmers welcome
with open arms
She can eat 50 aphids
on farms each day
keeping those pesky creatures away
But to me she is something quite special
This beautiful Lady in Red
Queen of all beetles
When I see her
I want to touch her
and gently stroke
her ruby red coat
My favorite beetle
She makes me gleeful
thus forever to me
she will always be
A beautiful Lady in Red

Mayflies
by Michael R. Burch
These standing stones have stood the test of time
but who are you
and what are you
and why?
As brief as mist, as transient, as pale ...
Inconsequential mayfly!
Perhaps the thought of love inspired hope?
Do midges love? Do stars bend down to see?
Do gods commend the kindnesses of ants
to aphids? Does one eel impress the sea?
Are mayflies missed by mountains? Do the stars
regret the glowworm’s stellar mimicry
the day it dies? Does not the world go on
as if it’s no great matter, not to be?
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose.
And yet somehow you’re everything to me.

AT ONE WITH NATURE
~~~~~~~~~~
The sun shines, brightly lights my day. My garden verdant many hues of green. Greater speedwell, resilient, blooms no matter the season. Late spring, early summer it explodes. Late Jack Frost, it copes beyond my imagination. A host to many invertebrates sadly made conspicuous by their absence. All misguided by a warming sun. The jet stream meanders too far south making for freezing nights. Most flora copes albeit momentarily set back, however,
most insects' don't survive. The daytime warmth encourages insect eggs', pupae, to hatch, doomed, instincts confounded.
a garden
one word... paradise
once our world
~
The day moves on, observed bird life failing, softbills take seed to feed their young. They are faced with a catch twenty-two situation. Feed themselves or feed their young. Aphids on the day abundant, some well sheltered will, and do survive the relentless nights. False security for others, how many would it take to keep a blackbird alive
gardens'
where one can cultivate
a love for nature
~
Sun still shining yet the wind chill felt. Summer, I think what
are you doing, but realisation sets in, it is not nature faulting it's us humans treating it as though it is a garbage bin. I know I do, and, maybe you do too. That is to help nature as we always have, sadly we are just a few. We try our best to draw attention to the devastation world pollution is creating. To much time spent by governments debating, if at all? Cos I reckon for centuries they have been faking. Take a good look at your garden where are all the pollinators, Thanks to winds, well at least for some, for no doubt there is flora that will succumb.
My day in my garden nearly done. Koi carp fed, some photography done, Garden sorted, grass cut, hedge begging to be clipped. I look agreeing, but it will keep till the morrow, come what may. Check the feeders, all is fine. Time now for a cuppa, to sit with my beloved, make sure she's comfy and make her smile, for sadly she been poorly for some time.
Sam is a novice gardener who stamps on all ants
He doesn't like them near or crawling on his plants
Their Queen was angry and wanted revenge
For the ones that had fallen she wanted to avenge.
They planned to get inside and under Sam's clothes
Cover his whole body from his head to his toes
The queen gave her order for her ants to attack
Every inch of his body, every orifice and crack.
There were flying ant squadrons in groups of twelve
Soldiers in lines and a lone scout out by himself.
The others were preparing for a mass swamping
While Sam continued with his clomping and stomping.
They entered inside both trouser leg realms
These little feisty red insects, these hardcore rebels
From somewhere inside it was smelly and breezy
And their night vision eyes made navigation more easy.
Sam's legs were hairy and wiry, like a hot tangled jungle
With volcano like spots and some weird looking fungal.
They battled there way through, this united strong army
While Sam was going mad and looked rather barmy.
They bit, they chewed, they spat and tickled
Sam smacking himself as he wriggled and wiggled
At all times they were all on high red alert.
To avoid being splattered by this mad dancing berk.
These tiny ninja assassins crawled under his shirt
His four limbs wildly failing; he went completely berserk
Flying ants swooping and diving to created a distraction
Sam's reaction to their actions gave them great satisfaction.
He jumped, he hopped, he twice did the splits
They bit here and there, including his small naughty bits
His limbs in and out; the ants hokey pokey
Limbs moving so fast they felt hot and smelt smokey.
Sam screamed "I am sorry please leave me alone
My garden is yours and every ants home
I didn't know aphids left you a sugary sweet treat"
I surrender, I give up, I admit my defeat."
Harmony and peace, balance restored
Nothing is mightier than a little ants sword
Sam's body now healed, no more ants in his pants
But beware if you ever harm a red or black ant.
Sundrops dapple umbrageous trees
strewing uncut diamonds, littering the path
with ambient flickers of what lies beyond.
Sundrops freckle ocean's surface
accenting the ripples that pattern the waves,
nuzzling playful kisses toward the warm beach.
Sundrops seduce the wayward wind
pirouetting with the aphids blissful dance,
a frenzied tarantella across my lips.
My garden is unfolding before my startled eyes.
Each blossom as it opens is a welcome, glad surprise.
The daffodils are blooming and spread sunshiny cheer,
While the tulips are struggling to hold up their heads this year.
The plum trees are in blossom, their branches snowy white,
Others playing possum keep their new buds closed up tight.
Rhododendrons showing color, camellias in full bloom,
The scene is ever changing in my outdoor living room.
Crocuses and small snowdrops are already past their prime.
Anemones and pansies are expected anytime.
A bunny in my garden is looking for a deal.
And eagle in my birch tree, eyes the bunny for a meal.
Oh my garden in the springtime is an optical delight,
While predators of every kind are looking for a bite.
I must find a way to thwart them without poisoning the land..
I will share with the less greedy, slugs and aphids must be banned.
Sleep is a bride I can never find,
not on nights behind this steering wheel
Night spiders and aphids are on my mind
and watching them explore my windshield feels almost surreal
The lights of the lot illuminate this new playground
a concrete field dotted with strays
The lively twilight nature makes is sound
as hungry dogs come out to play
Tiny screams come wafting up and then just drift away,
As she scours down her bathroom, on a busy cleaning day.
Small voices in a panic; she hears them yell and screech,
While scrubbing down the place they live with smelly chlorine bleach.
She bends an ear to listen close, then hears a teensy voice.
“Mercy mercy, show us please. We know you have a choice.”
She thinks of spidey in her bath only days before.
She’d coaxed him up the shower stall and gently to the floor.
A paper cup left standing near, to trap all errant bugs,
She often shooed them out the door with everything but hugs.
Spiders, moths and aphids; one time a little mouse,
All were free to live their lives, but not within her house.
Just yesterday the life she saved was but a lowly worm.
Traveling misbegotten trails; his doom was her concern.
And now these many little cries implore her to be kind.
To put away her chlorine bleach and give them all more time.
Their pleading falls on ears gone deaf and sadly each will learn;
She’d rather give a bug a break, than spare one filthy germ.
Ladybugs are beetles.
They eat aphids and mites, too.
They are red and spotted.
I love ladybugs, don't you?
Bonus activity: Inform children that ladybugs are a gardener's friend, as they devour
the aphids and spider mites that destroy a gardener's plants. Some gardeners even
purchase ladybugs from home and garden centers to sprinkle on their plants!
