Premium MemberDeath In a Lunch Hour

he entered the room as if rice was about to boil over,
seeing faces of those he didn't recognise look as though
they were reading the last line of a book they never read
before, staggered, asymmetrically pensive in times during
coffee servings and bites from donuts, but, given that it
was only midday, the flavour of the waitresses grumbled
in overlapping office lunch hours. little did our hero, who
entered with arched cat-back whiteness, know, his un-
expected audience, delivering blank verse in motor-
cycle and side-car loads, were systematically only there
to make up the numbers, merely propping up the inward
burst of off the street heart attacks, the last hope of ever
thwarted reasoning and too the waitresses were cardboard.

Premium MemberRip the Glass Ceiling

Social evolution invented down the line
selective and complex, customs skewed,
placing men in the lead, women behind,
for they are deemed the weaker gender,
born unequal in the nonpartisan world
under blue sky of freedom made for all,
to obey silently all the time, subjugated.

As the dark clouds of imposed illiteracy
and obdurate poverty drift slowly away,
the aspiration sun shines equally above
with rainbow hued dreams for humanity,
and as the archaic social norms discarded
crumble in the egalitarian cauldron of time,
women see the light of liberation flicker
at the end of the ancient tunnel dark.

It’s time for the tenets of human right
to redesign now the social fabric frayed.
Let not the gender divide asymmetrically
the open opportunities and obligations.
Let the women’s captive essence becomes
free to reach the heights where men are,
consciously ripping the glass ceiling contrived.

Premium MemberFootprints In the Snow

Walking under overcast sky
I trod through drifted snow,
no longer bearing allegiance
to platitudes disguised as wisdom
spun in gingerbread houses of the holy,
an asymmetrically challenged splinter
on a white horizon,
leaving a trail of footprints
on my frozen path.

Behind me lies the ranch house,
shutters closed in rapid eye movement,
dreaming of acres of wheat and barley
gleaming in July's opaque sunlight.
They will not know I've gone,
will assume I'm out walking.
Only as gray dusk settles
on the porcelain landscape
will they wonder where I am.

In my dark coat and cap,
shouldering a pack,
I move past the fence posts
where snow mounds like the litter
of attic antiques reciting memories
in foreign tongues.
One leafless elm bears witness
to my departure, waving
in benign breeze.

Lest my tears freeze I hold them back.
Though my footprints sprint backwards
in the charcoal of sacrosanct earth
I must stay to my gospel:
to the naked eye the flat distance
may only promise glaciers,
but I seek the aurora borealis
hidden in daylight's dim emergence,
where the crocus blooms
in barren existence.

The Way It Was Written

The way it was written

A pen with a black ink has no boundary
It flows a stroke that no one can see
The written words are a phase of reality
Where the ghost of each penning is beyond equity

Letters by letters are gone too wild
It is written asymmetrically, as it goes and glides
The mask of its words are faded, to black and white
While the thoughts on it can kill a lion's lad

Sentences are powerful like a piercing knife
To heart that is ready to bleed nor love
The way it was written is such a venomous one
You’ll never understand if you won’t read between the line

Black Tea

To arise alone in a half complete bed
asymmetrically warm
half of what was once whole

A drowsy confusion
guides brown eyes to
the white letter
calmly resting in the mornings light

The beautiful present
written within the white
brings forth blurry vision
forgetting in an instant all that was to be
their future

He was already treding
his destiny that he
beckoned on himself
from early days
of tea and training

Of a frightening home
a loving brother
to a barren land
now eyes of hate

To have known
what was awaiting him
at the end of this road
and to keep walking
toward the beast
he had created

To die in the arms
of the one he’d raised
of the one he betrayed
was his fate
of that mournful day

The Night Hooter

copyright© shonima burman

In the deep darkness of night,
They complete their silent flight.
With a flat face and forward facing eyes,
They rotate their head and neck upto 270 degrees.
Despite having binocular vision,
Their eyes are completely immobile in action.
Ear tufts are meant for camouflage and aggression,
These birds are shrewd and quick in predation.
With ears set asymmetrically on their skull,
These carnivorous birds have coloration mostly dull.
Mainly live on eating insects and small rodents,
They constitute an important part of the ecosystem.
They create a wide variety of vocalization,
They are an unique wonder of God's creation!

A Bombshell

Lacy black shell
Ever so fine
Asymmetrically designed
For a love of mine.

Fingertips touched
Ever softly.
Asked whom this was for
Tell not my heart.
Her name I cannot reveal.
Eve of the year
Reunites us.

She rejoices now.
Her sadness subsided.
Evicted from her sylph
Enriched her temperament,
Lust love laid-up luxuriously.
