Zuzu' S Petals
ZUZU’S PETALS
Zuzu’s petals were reality-checks for George Bailey.
If they were in his pocket, his was a was real-life vigorous;
If not, it was a dream. They were proof of reality.
The petal issue, like all proof, has to be rigorous,
Deeply-felt and highly-personal. As when you tweak
Yourself to confirm it’s no dream,
Or alarm clock breaks your reverie with its squeak,
Or Olympic gymnast falls from his balance beam.
Cold water on your face will intrude
Into sleep and confirm you are in the waking world.
Face-slap for the hysterical, to return to the subdued-
Especially if under pressure you are swirled.
Proof’s not always painful, just recalls where you were born.
Failed credit card : feet back on ground at the bank.
The vinegar factory smell, or childhood sound of foghorn
Reminds you who in life you have to thank.
Seems like we all feel living in a fantasy world is best,
And need to warn ourselves, keep on our mettle.
Everyone has his check-mechanism and reality test.
Every one carries his Zuzu petal
