It seems to be so outrageous
The English use of the gee-H’s
Learning our language must be rough.
Let’s take a look starting with TOUGH
Adding an R really makes it go off
To a sound change as in TROUGH.
Now an added H will change sound too
Like ewe or you as in THROUGH.
Removal of the R makes it different by far
And does alter it so;
At least it seems as THOUGH!
And readers I do hereby beseech
That you tell me why
SPEAK’s spelling goes double-E in SPEECH
I’d like to know before I die!
