In the porch of my house
Is hung a cage, small
In it dwells two inhabitants
Ounces of flesh in feathered coats
Two Finches, a male and a female

The vastness of the sky being denied
Do they live in regret?
Do they have dark remorse?
Do they miss the fair fields?
Do they long for the blue skies?
Do they envy the birds flying high?
I wonder…..!

This cage is their sky and their world
Here they co habit in love
Unruffled by confinement
Often seen preening their feathers
I see them doing it for each other
At times they seem to sit entranced
Their songs are not of plaintive notes

Across the bars they see the sun,
The moon and the stars
Remote from preying predators
They live in unperturbed solitude
Loneliness heightening their need for each other

When we turn to them
We hear their sweet murmurous tweets
And the fragrance of their love
Seeps into our wistful lives
With night fall, they cuddle together
Close, so close, she and he locked as one
In such indivisible togetherness!

There upon they sleep
Drowsing…. drowsing deep!

In the wild they are at risk from predators and lack of food but you provide food and safety for them. Always a difficult situation, some say they should be free like animals in a zoo who live their lives in captivity but again they too are cared for and live in safety. Tom

This is a beautifully written poem, Valsa. Your amazing imagery, combined with the already exquisite writing, was nothing short of spectacular. Despite their desire to go, they can't help but fall in love with one another and their generous hosts. time capturing moments.

Love it, they could choose to go insane and fight daily over food and territory Fly into the bars with might and chew at them to break out, But they understand these bars are for protection. They are provided with food and water. Their owner sings with joy to them and watches their love for another as He wished all had this love within. But sees His kind went wrong somewhere, out for their own,but have a way back. Each morning they shout with praise of joy of this new sunshine beauty witnessed.

Beautiful poetry, Valsa; thoughtful and heartfelt. I have two cats, that I do not let out. Certain they would rather be free...but they would not survive long. Some do, but the rare few. None I know without human help, an occasional bowl of water and food left out. Hard world, for little ones and big ones. Blessings.

They are enamored in love for each other and their caring hosts--though they would otherwise love to fly away. Moments well captured, Valsa.

This is a true story. A couple of years back we had several love birds and 2 finches. Later we had to be away for three months at a stretch. So we gave our love birds to friends. The finches were very happy together. Then something unexpected happened. I have written a sequel to it which I will be posting here. Thanks a lot Vijay.
