With Love and Laughter Linked

The sea was all he knew before they met While she was raised on scented, satin sheets He slept on deck and learned to hoist the net But it was she whose spell could tame the fleets For she had beauty, yes, and she had brains And still it was her laugh that won his heart Her giggle, gentle as the morning rains And he, a tar, had tales he could impart So when God called her home at eighty years He cut the line and set to sea once more To fill the ocean with his sweat and tears With hope he’d find her on that final shore From son to son the saga was passed down How laughter launched a love of great renown *Written August 17, 2018 Entry for the Super Sonnet Premium Contest Sponsored by John Hamilton

Pity those who cannot make the link. Love is no fun without laughter or maybe not love at all. Will have to explore what other links you have made. Regards David in NZ

Thank you for my 4th place. I am not doing much writing right now. It seems as though I have written everything and there is nothing left to say. Thanks you for getting my brain in gear for a little while. I like your sonnet. Love, Joyce

This brings tears to my heart. It’s remarkable how you took your uncle’s story and transformed it in this way. A terrible loss for one loving partner is tragic. On another note, thank you for your comment in these very difficult times.

Duke, this poem means more to me than most of my others. Uncle Ted is 92 and each time I see him, I worry it might be my last opportunity. Aunt Gene was so beautiful that it surprised me when he told me how he fell in love with her laugh. Thanks for reading!

Maureen, I am recovering from emergency surgery on August 27th, so I cannot fully respond to comments, but I do appreciate your kind words. This sonnet was inspired by the love between my Uncle Ted and Aunt Gene (Genevieve). I have always loved them dearly and have been trying to help my uncle through period of depression since Gene died. Bless you for understanding how special this poem is to me. I have sent a copy to my uncle via his son, my cousin Ted. I hope he my uncle receives some joy from reading it. Love, Carolyn

Paul, when I visited my uncle over Christmas, I saw a huge portrait of my aunt in her wedding dress. It was beautiful. It was then my uncle told me he had fallen in love with her laugh. I haven't stopped thinking about that. My aunt was dating singer Perry Como when she met my uncle. True love. Thanks for reading.

Yes, this was inspired by my Uncle Ted and my late Aunt Genevieve. Ted surprised me last Christmas when he told me it was Gene's laugh that had him hooked. He was always quite witty, so she laughed a lot.

Thanks, CayCay. Appreciate the visit. My uncle, for whom I wrote this, was in the Navy. Later, my brother followed in his footsteps. And I love boating too!
