How I wish you knew ...
Do you know?
Do you realize how beautiful you are?
Do you notice the people whose heads spin as you pass?
Do you feel ANY worth after he's done with you?
I watch you walk past each day as I sip cappuccino
A new bruise or cut or burn or limp
Sometimes a black eye under your sunglasses
Oh, how I wish I could give you strength to leave him
It seems so simple to me, to just ... go
Just wish him to hell and leave the monster for good
Easy to say, but I'm not the one at the business end
Of those fists and boots and belts ... and slurs
It's not fair to expect it, but I pray just the same
Each day I pray ... and smile at you
You always return it, but tentative and shy
As though he's there ... watching
Oh, you are worth SO much more than you realize
So brave, to gift me that smile each day
Such courage it takes for those stares and comments at work
Such courage to face him at the end of every day
Perhaps you wonder why I don't speak ... say hi
Sometimes I wonder that as well
But I think perhaps ... just perhaps
You are MUCH more brave ...
Than I am.
