Wishbone

“You can’t make homes out of human beings.”
— Warsan Shire

Wishbone

He appraises me as though my bones
were fashioned for breaking,
two limbs diverging from a sacred centre,
his hunger already choosing
which half it intends to keep.

There is an unfeeling felony in such looking,
the way desire can undress a person
until even personhood becomes superfluous.
He makes an altar of my anatomy,
then calls appetite reverence.

He would tie me to his tongue
and still not know the aptitude of my name.
He mistook possession for intimacy,
lust for fractured divinity,
my body for some reliquary
he might prise apart for providence.

His eyes of penitence arrived too late.
Beneath fractured halos,
what hollow absolution resurrects
a woman reduced to portions:
mouth, waist, thighs,
the convenient mathematics of flesh?

He had already tested where I was weakest,
where the bone would give,
how much wanting could be mistaken
for tenderness before it became cruelty.

That was the anatomy of absence:
to be entirely present
inside a body someone else
had already erased me from.

I was no omen for his wanting,
no little bone upon which
he might wager a wish.

Yet he still broke me.

But he did not know what wishbones remember:
that they once belonged to wings,
that fracture is a hinge, not an ending,
that some things split
without surrendering themselves.

He expected two obedient halves,
a clean division,
something small enough to possess.
Instead, the fracture disclosed
what his hunger had failed to comprehend:
I had never belonged to the bone.

And if time turns,
will scars stain the sky?

Let them.

The larger fragment in his fist
never meant he won.
It was only proof
that possession leaves evidence.

He had to break a thing that flew
to believe it was his.

This is a very soul hitting take and you took the prompt to a whole different dark and deadly place where so many confuse abuse to devotion and desire! It isnt I especially loved "I was no omen for his wanting, no little bone upon which he might wager a wish. Yet he still broke me." That made my heart ache. Thank you for writin Congratulations on your top win Sending you light always Also congrats on POTD! Well deserved Fave it is

The last line, Made me think of some individuals who are abusive and feels superior putting terror in ones mind and on body. Its sad reality for many women, and some men too. Unfortunate that this happens still in the world, and so many are silenced, your voice and poetry would give strength to so many ~ there are many lines in this that are powerful and your metaphors and weaving of words throughout here is so very eloquent! I love the flow too. I especially loved the way youv painted imagery

Your poem has the grand Wishbone Metaphor: A wishbone requires destruction to grant a desire. You subvert this entirely in the final stanzas. "Altar," "reverence," "divinity," "reliquary," "absolution" etcetera are beautifully weaponized against "anatomy," "portions," "mathematics of flesh". Congratulations!

Thank you, Christuraj. I really appreciate how deeply you engaged with the metaphor and the language throughout the poem. Your observation about the wishbone requiring destruction in order to grant a desire particularly struck me as it speaks so closely to what I wanted the metaphor to convey. Thank you for such an insightful reading and for the congratulations.

No one deserves to be treated like a wishbone. So many emotions tangle within your words. Congratulations Billie, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy

Thank you kindly Brandy. I completely agree, no one deserves to be treated as something to be pulled apart, consumed or discarded. I’m really glad the emotions beneath the metaphor came through so strongly. Thank you for your kindness, your hugs and for celebrating POTD with me. Sending hugs right back.

Thank you so much, Anaya. My poem certainly came from the gravity of experience, but thankfully that chapter belongs firmly to the past. I rebuilt and healed many years ago and I’m now incredibly fortunate to be in a loving and beautiful marriage. That makes writing about where I once was feel even more meaningful. Thank you for celebrating the POTD with me.

Billie, congratulations on your POTD. There is an authentic rawness about your images - a sense of having lost a place of safety and security. Blessings to you!

Thank you so much, Sam. I really appreciate your thoughtful reading. That sense of losing safety and security is very much woven into the emotional landscape of my poem, particularly the vulnerability of being desired without truly being seen as a whole person. I’m grateful that the rawness of those images resonated with you. Thank you for the congratulations and blessings to you also ✨

Dear Billie, Congrats on POTD; that is a breathtaking, fierce, and astonishingly powerful work of art. Reframing the break not as defeat but as a return to flight, and showing that holding the bigger piece is just "proof that possession leaves evidence," is a monumental, defiant triumph. A magnificent, deep piece of writing, Billie. Blessings, Daniel

A deeply disturbing poem on domestic abuse, and controlling behaviour, so glad this person never fully broke the victim; the metaphorical imagery using the wishbone is off the scale, and works quite powerfully here, congratulations Billie on a most deserving POTD, cheers David

A powerful write ✍️ Billie a great contender for Ink competition. Written with great courage standing up to not be controlled by a man nobody has the right to possess someone. Well said if every woman in this situation took courage like you abuse n domestic violence would be punished as it should be. I am from UK and slowly women taking courage to out the bully processor but still fear stops alot. Happy September courageous woman 👏🦋

Thank you so much for your thoughtful words. Thankfully, that chapter of my life was many years ago. I rebuilt, healed, and am now in a loving marriage where I am truly seen and valued. Wishbone comes from a place of reflection and reclamation rather than defeat. 💪🏾

Hi Billie. Only an audacious and uncaring person would look upon another human as something to be owned and used. I truly admired the verse in which you courageously state that fracture is a hinge and hinges can be repaired. Yes, there would be scars, but they too heal and serve as reminders that we cannot be possessed. An excellent entry for Ink's Beloved contest.⭐

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful reading. I especially appreciate that you picked up on the idea of fracture as a hinge rather than an ending. For me, that was such an important part of the poem, scars may remain as evidence of what we have endured but they do not make us possessions of those who caused them. Mush appreciated ✨

This is a profoundly moving piece. The free verse form beautifully complements the raw, unrestrained exploration of objectification and survival. Your central metaphor of the wishbone is brilliantly executed, especially the powerful realization that the bone "once belonged to wings" and that "fracture is a hinge." You have captured the devastating difference between possession and true intimacy with stunning, visceral imagery. A beautifully crafted and empowering read.
