Why

Children ask so many questions Mommy, why is the grass green Why is the sky blue, and why do the stars come out at night Why is the moon so small that if I put my hand in front of it, I cover it up and it disappears completely Children are natural scientists, so curious And yet, in homes across America they never get answers to these and so many other questions, while in school they don't even get to ask them Only one question left now: W H Y ? !

Kids questions are fascinating; we often discourage them when we should be encouraging them to ask more. Well penned and a "fav".

You are so right: Parents and teachers so often discourage kids. Perhaps it's because they are so young, little more than kids themselves, with no idea how much damage they're doing...

So sad when curiosity is gone. Thanks for sharing this poem.

Yes, so true, Line...and even sadder when it's crushed out of them in school, a place where they should be imbued with it, where questions should be affirmed and even celebrated! :) gw

Why...maybe so that they can find better answers! maybe...let's hope :)

There are many teachers who are so scripted, they get annoyed by these constant questions. However, I have met many more who love questions like this. It gives them an opportunity to go "off script" which is when real teaching begins.

Hi Gershon, What a good poem on the curious minds of the little ones. I found it to be deep as well, they ask why ? And their questions are still left unanswered. I enjoy your " teacher" perspective in your poems:-) Alexis

Thanks, Alexis... I really have to wonder why science is still so unemphasized in so many American schools after all these years, and esp. with the STEM push at the high school and college levels... :) gw
