When Sparrows Fall

He saw me as a friend, and I saw him as a fallen creature in dire straits. We both were creatures of God with unique communication abilities. But he, a little sparrow, was quiet and still in the parking lot, but about to become 'one with the pavement'. The fallen sparrow said to me with very little energy to open his mouth, "Please help". It's been more than 20 years, and I can still see those little eyes staring at me. He requested neither water, food, or shelter, but assumed that I knew just what was best for him. Initially, I was disappointed, not really knowing what was best for him. I asked him where his mother or relatives might be, but I could see that he was much too weak to speak. Notwithstanding, like a dear mother or caring father, with all the love that I could muster, I reached for him, and picked him up. I embraced him lovingly, not knowing what I would do next. Realizing that my new found friend needed more than just a touch; that love and affection would not be enough, I looked all around for reasons I never knew. After that, I looked up to the heavens and in an instance, lifted him to the sky, whereupon he flapped his little wings, and he did fly. As I watched him and said goodbye to my short-lived friend, I knew that he felt right at home in the clear blue sky. I was really proud of him for his willingness to take ownership of his own life. And then it occurred to me as I stared at him with a heart-felt sigh, that he never asked me to teach him to fly. The little birdy was born to fly. I tell you, our God of all things big and small, sees all that falls, even sparrows. That sparrow may have considered me a wonderful gift fallen from the sky, but all I did was give him a lift. 042722PS
