What If? For Veteran's Day
A man gave me a gun and said,
“Kill that person over there.
Kill that person because he
wants to kill you. Kill him
because he has hate in his
heart. Kill him because
everything we cherish is
at risk.”
I placed the gun on the ground and,
with tears in my eyes, said,
“I cannot kill that person over there,
even if he wants to kill me.
I cannot kill him because
I don’t have hate in my heart.
I cannot kill him because,
if I did, everything I cherish
would be at risk.”
