What a Small Town Girl Does
I was raised by a volunteer who taught Sunday School for sixty years.
She baked cookies and made homemade pies and took them to the sick.
She brought groceries to those who did not have food.
She taught children how to read.
I can never hope to be the volunteer my mother was.
She was invited to a volunteer luncheon once.
She did not go.
She said “none of the volunteers went”.
She said “That is not why we volunteer. We do not want to be recognized.”
I learned from my mother.
How to treat people.
I am the first person to give someone a ride.
To teach an extra class, to bring someone groceries.
It is what a small town Iowa girl with my mother must do.
