What - No Comment

What? No Comment? I read your latest poem today But did not leave a comment I don’t know what you meant to say Couldn’t decode your intent I wanted to be supportive And offer encouragement Wax poetic with adjectives I didn’t have to invent You’re not the first whose verse I’ve read And sat staring bewildered Filled with an awful sense of dread Like theater of the absurd Mom suggested I say nothing If I’d nothing good to say So to the air my arms I fling And go on my merry way I am always seeking the good In every Soup poet’s work I’d rather stay misunderstood Than come off like a cruel jerk *Entry for "Put Yourself in the Reader's Shoes" contest

I like this and have shared the sentiments it expresses. I wrote a poem, "On Reading a Poem that I Don't Understand." I'll check and see if I've posted it to Soup and if not, will put it up. Thanks for sharing your great work. Elton

Truth, politness and wit I have read in your comments in my time on the Soup Carolyn. And never destructive, always constructive as many others have left. I for one have learnt to much from you and so so many others. Many congratulations on your win in HG's fine contest >> James :)

My sentiments exactly, Carolyn! Congratulations on this well-earned win! I prefer not to leave a comment when I find a poem offensive, beyond my understanding..when a friend writes such a poem, I will ask for enlightenment, not just leave a comment for the sake of doing so. Have a great day! Much love, Audrey

i think your 3rd stanza really provocative, (ie) making me, think that it is just best to be honest, and offer some supportive advice, if you think the poetry is that bad.still if you don't start you will never finish, now i'll finish.

Yes, my beautiful blonde poetess, you are too kind. Maybe it's better left unsaid. Regards always with warmest affection, Donna Douglas from Gerard.

You're so right Caroline. I do the same thing. Sounds like we were raised by sisters. About my syllable poem. Try what I do. It is easy for me to write in rhyme. I write in my regular 8 and 6 or 8 and 8 and then just add or subtract words to make it fit her scheme. I did it that way and from your remarks I did okay. Love, Joyce

I find there are poets who blog and post poetry to be provocative so I am careful if I comment there, I do not want to provide "ammo" to feed their ego. I do not see my role on the soup as a teacher or counselor, but as a fellow poet offering honest comment. Thanks for the thoughts!

few times i have run up against this problem. poems i cant commet on because they are so rotten i'd rather pretend that i did'nt see them. sometimes i just sit and watch the comment box wondering how to start. then after a while i just go to the next poem. this often occures with poets i know and i HATE to not leave a comment.
