We Will Be Friends
You will be my best friend.
You will talk to me, and I will listen.
I will talk to you, and you will listen
For the most part.
We will have conversations.
We will talk about everything and nothing
And we will learn nothing about each other from it
At all.
You will be my most trusted friend.
You will let me talk about my problems, dilemmas, conflicts, and you will not laugh at me
To my face.
You will tell me that you like my shirt
Though you will not remember that is was purple tomorrow
You will tell me that my hair looks stupid when it is down
Because what are friends for
After all?
You will be my confidante.
You will learn that I am in love with the boy with green eyes
You won’t breath a word of this to him
Just to his friends.
You will tell me that my secrets are safe with you
You’ll keep my words behind your lips that are drawn so tightly
That they’re transparent.
You will be my oldest friend
We will go to school together all year
I will see you in the halls with your other friends and you will look at me
And then look away
You will remember to say hi
When we are forced to be partners in class
I will see you everyday
And when you don’t see me
And I will scream in my head
“What did I do? What did I do?”
