We Lay In Clover
Inhaling scent of heather and each blossomed spray
Surrounding us that warm clear springtime day,
We lay in clover, with our eyes on a bouquet -
White, wooly blooms - the wild blue yonder’s grand display!
Those flower-clouds went softly drifting; by and by
They changed into a valentine so very high
Above us in the heaven’s perfect azure sky,
As if a prelude to romance. . . . to make us sigh!
Then like two children savoring a sweet parfait,
We stayed deliciously engaged in passion play
Until disheveled, and our hair in disarray,
We heard above us in a tree, a squawking jay!
He seemed to want to split us up; we’d not comply!
And even now, I yearn to be where you and I
Both pledged a love that man or God could not defy.
Alas, we never guessed our spring could ever die!
