Way Back Then When I Was Ten
Way back then when I was Ten
There were times I recall before
A year had passed to end the War
Block parties ran the streets galore
Depression weaned and life was fine
No rationed food and free to dine
Spinster teachers taught us well
To learn life’s lessons and excel
Coal was used to heat our home
And collected as the week would pass
We stayed close and never roamed
Our world enclosed by one small street
There were not many folks to meet
A shy and awkward child was I
Difficult to blend in well
But only time would break the spell
Then one day I began to pry
In reading books and seek the lore
Of travel and its scenes galore
I accomplished all the dreams I sought
On lessons learned and what it brought
And recall the times I lived as a child
Fight life when it’s fierce embrace it when mild
But I’ll never forget to to remember when
Way back then when I was ten
