King George was fast running out of money
Tried to squeeze more out of the colony
Thirteen states said no
Told George where to go
Saying "thank you, but we'll run our own country"...

Paul Revere warned the British are coming
The yanks said "that's ok we ain't moving"
Many heroic acts abound
The militias stood their ground
And soon had the Brit Redcoats a-running...

I like the humor of this one and the retelling of the fighting spirit of the people of the USA. I have been taught that the fight for independence was about the fact that we were being taxed but not allowed to have representation in the government over in England. Thank you very much Sara, King George wanted more money to fight wars and thought the colonies would be a soft touch but how wrong he was. Tom

I think you should run for Presi, you bring out the light side of life, and I like that, they are much to serious in the Cabinet these days :)

Very cleverly composed Tom. A great read. I think I've mentioned this before on another piece by your good self.. namely that there are major moments in our history that we should not be too proud of. Cheers - Gary.

Tom I love your knowledge of history and it is sad that Britain took so many countries and colonized them, worldwide. Mind you, so did the French, the Dutch, and the German and not forgetting the Portuguese. I love your pic. Blessings, Jennifer

Thanks for this Tom. It makes me reflect on the way the British tried to dominate everywhere. They played predator; took their prey. Tony.

Thank you very much Terry, like all empires the further they go out the thinner they get, and the cost involved, the Falklands comes to mind, it costs millions to defend it, money better spent at home in my opinion. Enjoy your weekend Tom

The Tea Tax gets the credit, but it was the tobacco legislation that ruined Virginia plantations which Washington, Jefferson, et al found revolting. Well done, Tom, but we would be a better country if you had kept those blood-thirsty pilgrims!

Thank you Gershon, you're so right, if George hadn't pressed for more taxes the war might have never been and you'd be flying the union jack. Enjoy your weekend. Tom

While your other limericks typically include a lot of deep symbolism, this one isn't any different. I wish you the best in all your endeavors, and may your day be filled with many beautiful moments. I believe that everyone is born free with all my heart, and every nation that fought for its freedom deserves to be free.
