Wall of Division

Listen to poem:
A sunken tombstone lay on either side, The wall itself enswathed in moss and fern, Fragmented, as the bond of blood which died Before the grave envelopped each in turn. Two brothers who had once been closest friends Who ran through fields and forests hand in hand, Too proud and hard of heart to make amends, Had forced a subdivision of the land. Their Father, by such hatred torn apart, With his own weathered hands had built the wall Each brick ripped out a portion of his heart Partitioning his sons once and for all. Now woodland hides their memories from sight But passers-by will often stop and stare To contemplate man's universal plight And wonder why the rugged wall is there. 10.10.20 A Wall In The Woods Poetry Contest Sponsored by Craig Cornish N/A COMPLETELY YOUR CHOICE (28)any form any theme Brian Strand JUDGED :10/18/2020 Hm's And Na's October 2020 Poetry Contest Sponsored by Constance La France

Thank you so much, David. I think that your voice recording really enhances your poetry. Sometimes people upload an automated rendering of their poems however which just sounds robotic. I fail to understand that mindset and would much rather hear my internal rendition in that case.

Wendy, this is a deeply saddening poem, and speaks to all the walls we humans put up, literally and figuratively, due to our pride and unwillingness to make amends. Even without the accompaniment of your lovely reading voice, I would be adding this to my faves (but thank you for the addition!) Congratulations for your recent wins with Craig and Constance. Enjoy your day ~ John

You're so encouraging,John. I had originally intended to leave it on a happier note with the brothers' grandchildren playing games around it but I was 'pulled in an other direction!'

You tell a tragic story with such an able pen, Wendy. What a pity lack of forgiveness could lead to this! I have enjoyed your take on this prompt topic...quite creative I must say. ~ congratulations on your fine win. Regards // paul

Your vision for the reason the wall exists makes a sorrowful, but dynamic read. Congratulations on your winning write, Wendy.

Wendy, there is a sadness as deep as the fondation of the wall expressed in the lines of your story. Just heartbreaking. In the end the quarrel was lost to time and all that was left of it was a crumbling wall. Words of wisdom my friend. Congratulations on your win!
