Vultures Circling

The ancients honored you in their cultures Mythology crowned Jataya, King Of Vultures Obligate scavengers, you conduct your foray Toward putrid carcass of what will be your prey Dead bodies, prairie dogs, rodents, wild boars Insatiable eclectic pallet opens many doors Vomit, your defense, your uric acid searing Hunched backbone, broadened wingspan so fearing Here they soar, the vultures who seldom kill Just scouting about for their carrion meal Written 7/21/22 FOURTH PLACEMENT Vultures Circling Theme Pick A Title Poetry Contest Sponsored by Edward Ibeh

Like it, the vultures are circling and death is never far away. Natures cleaners and they do their job so well. Always wondered if you killed one, would bad luck befall.

Thank you, Edward, I am honored for my win, thank you for supporting PS. with your wonderful and challenging contests. I wanted a longer poem, but any more lines I would have had to delineate differences between vultures and other birds. Warmest wishes! ~Anaya

This has been a riveting read Anaya. I have always thought as vultures as synonymous with death and dying. A quick search in Google-Land brought up the following: "In Hindu mythology, a vulture is said to be the carrier of God Sani (Saturn). In some religion vultures are also considered deities and in some they belong to deities and god while in some communities they are believed to be “untouchable” They appear to be very intelligent creatures. Everything has its place on Earth. Cheers - Gary

I hear you Anaya! :) I still smile thinking of the cartoon vultures in Disney's 'Jungle Book' complete with Faux Liverpool Beatle accents. :) Cheers - Gary

Like you Gary, I like to research. Yet sometimes it takes further investigation to explain it thoroughly. Mythology in any culture demands a lot of study and consideration, example, I read 'Jataya' and below Valsa 'Jatayu' translations always in dispute! Czar vs Tsar. Different alphabets. Thank you for the added scholarship, Gary. I'm glad you thought it riveting. CHEERS! ~Anaya :)

You seem to have great knowledge of Hindu mythology. Yes 'Jatayu' the mythical bird in the Ramayana is a vulture like bird. Vultures don't kill, but feed on carcasses, you are right ! Great entry for the contest ! All the Best, Anaya !

Hi Evelyn, good of you to have read my Circling Vultures. No way I would have left out the hunch back, the vultures signature trademark. (hahaha) Thank you kindly!

Hello I Am Anaya, when the vultures circles around there will be dead animals around. I know they have to eat. But it creeps me out. Hugs.

Hello I Am Anaya, although mother nature made the birds beautiful, the vultures are not beautiful ther must be a reason for that. Hugs. Darlene
