My breath catches
With but a moment of your gaze
Your eyes are like mine
Oh darker, certainly, and a bit larger
But they see what mine do, react to light the same way
Move and study, blink and bat, stare and sparkle
They are incredible eyes, full of bright and life
I wish I could tell you ...
I wish I knew enough of your language
To convey what is in my heart
The most basic of feelings
That you are precious, beautiful, a creation of wonder
That I find you ever as much of a human being
That these others who ignore you
The ones who pass you on the street as if you are phantom
And hush you into the shadowed corners of society
Are the ones whose character I question
For it is the very FIRST rule of humanity
That we treat all others the same as we would be treated
So please do not bow your head or cower
Do not hide in the dim reaches
Be proud of the unique, exquisite person you are
Made of stardust and complexity
Created with precision and immaculate intent
To breathe and walk and dream
To touch and be touched
To be appreciated and loved
As my eyes are loving you ... now.
