* For my dearest children, who now have children of their own * ~ Here in your father's arms Birthed and crying ... Afforded of worldly harms Daylight dying ... Lullabies shall kiss your ears Sleep my child, allay your tears Love abides until the sandman comes Here on your father's knee Small and bouncing ... Story songs to brighten thee Darkness denouncing ... Happy endings made to smile Heavy eyelids all the while Love abides until the sandman comes Here in your father's keep New wings, proving ... Soaring free, but for sleep Burgeoning, moving ... Reluctantly I'm letting go Tumble, rise, I watch you grow Love abides until the sandman comes Here in your father's heart Gone now, ages ... Stories of your own, impart Turning pages ... Now, those lullabies to sing Children, thine, beneath your wing Love abides until the sandman comes Here at your father's side My hours numbered ... Now it's you who must abide Breaths, encumbered ... Joyous days we shared, beguiled Please don't cry, my darling child Love abides until the sandman comes. ~ 1st Place ~ in the "Your Best Poem 2020" Poetry Contest, John Hamilton, Judge & Sponsor. ~ 1st Place ~ in the "What Matters Most To You" Poetry Contest, Chantelle Anne Cooke, Judge & Sponsor.

Greg, this one really sings to me. Being a father who cares deeply for my kids, I grasp these sentiments you've expressed so touchingly. Your form and rhyme scheme are spot-on, which makes me wonder if this is a lyric? But the arc from birth of child to deathbed of dad is what grips me the most. I have often wondered what I would say in that situation, but have never written it down as you have. I value this greatly, and am storing it in my faves for safekeeping and re-reading. Blessings ~ John

Such expressions, boundless, heartfelt joy, tinged with the sadness living brings. Would that all could feel as you do, so that young ones would never have cause to doubt a father's love. Beautifully expressed and tenderly penned, worthy of its vaunted placement.

Greg, this is stunning. The waves of your indentations form a visual oscillation representing the undulations of the life of a father from first day through letting go of a grown child to comforting that child as they let you go on your deathbed. So much emotion. I'm no longer surprised by how stunning your poetry is; what amazes is how OFTEN your poetry is stunning! Fantastic write, another fave ~ John
