Notes About The Poem

Transcendental Triptych of Epiphanies

Daniel Henry Rodgers

"If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry." - Emily Dickinson

=======================

Transcendental Triptych of Epiphanies

into the depths of the bell jar

In quiet solitude
    on an autumn night
    i drifted through
    a quotidian quagmire.

fleeting thoughts of stillness
    sparked a quest
    for transcendence
    in moments evanescent.

the noumenal world beckoned
    yet slipped away
    as i fumbled through
    a phenomenological haze.

my mind
    more vast than the sky
    contemplated infinity
    stumbled on the nigh.

in solitude
    found both peace and despair
    a paradoxical dance
    where creation meets air.

the empty eye
    through penelope's deceit
    revealed wisdom
    in our mortal conceit.

walden's sanctity of simplicity

one crisp autumn morn
    i fled the city's clamor
        retreating to a forest
            with trees of grandeur.

a babbling brook's lapping water
    soothed my soul
        nature's apothecary
            offered sweet control.

in interstitial spaces
    of consciousness
        i glimpsed the ineffable
            then lost its face.

pine-scented air
    filled my lungs
        filtered sunlight
            warmed my skin among.

i contemplated life's
    absurd truths
        accepting the useless
            therein lies the roots

It vanished
    leaving me with a sense
        of longing
            and incompleteness immense

self-reliance oversoul

by the flickering campfire
    shadows danced
    as I pondered self-reliance
entranced.

the oversoul permeates
    the ether
    uniting disparate souls
in harmony neither.

through self-reliance
    i touched divinity
    yet in unity
i found my identity.

a delicate balance emerged
    individualism
    and interconnectedness
converged.

the path to enlightenment
    paved with doubt
    led to wisdom
in the shallows devout

like a gnat caught in gusts
    i was both
    part of something greater
uniquely betrothed.

coda the transcendental paradox

In existence's crucible
    paradox found
bell jar's light
    walden's chaos profound.

the universe
    cruel and kind
fragments and unites
    as we remain whole
yet apart in sights.

we must accept the abyss
    while reaching for depths
for in contradiction
    truth takes its steps.

life's ephemeral epiphanies
    though slight
reveal eternity
    in fleeting instants' light.

gazing at stars
    i felt peace and wonder
my small existence
    both insignificant
and asunder.

within this eternal paradox
    this timeless riddle
at the intersection
    of infinite possibilities
a middle

i found life's beauty
   and meaning
   as ancient sages proclaim

                Imago Dei Redeeming.

What a wonderful quest after self reliance and identity. Realizing that it cannot be found in the cacophony of everyday existence, like David Thoreau, you retreated into the solitude and serenity of the woods. "gazing at stars i felt peace and wonder my small existence both insignificant and asunder." When one comes to this realization, there will start an intense search after the real identity. In your case, this search culminated and it ended up in something so beautiful.....you found 'life's beauty and meaning'. What a celestial transformation. This relentless quest after the meaning of life leads us through moments of doubt, darkness and clarity and each step reveals fragments of truth. Great penning, dear philosopher cum poet !

Dear Valsa, What a joy it is to read your introspective thoughts on my poem. I find almost as much pleasure in reading responses like yours, which uncover deeper meanings, as I do in the writing itself. Your interpretation allows me to see the poem through another's eyes. Thank you for your depth of understanding. Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel"

Dear daniel, this is just beyond impeccable! The slight alliterations to sumptuous diction and imagery youv painted too! Its one of those poems that would evoke so many thoughts and emotions and awaken all senses of the reader when reading! I love especially “through self-reliance i touched divinity yet in unity i found my identity.” Oh to find identity can be a long journey too sometimes. “ life's ephemeral epiphanies though slight reveal eternity in fleeting instants' light.” Once again the philospher that understands things through time and observation can be felt through those words alone! I really love the depth of this and your arrangement of lines truly is appealing! What an exquisite poem this is! Pleasure reading this poetic gem! This is easily a fav for me because of the way you’ve written and also for the depth! Its powerful! And wise! Sending you light always

Dearest Empress, It was lovely reading your comments this morning and I am very appreciative of each of your visits. I always contemplate questions and search for answers, and many times the answers aren't always forthcoming. But I believe that it is the joy of the journey regardless of what happens. Ultimately, the true and final answers are from God himself. I always think that as poets who most influenced our writings, and the answer is there is a plethora of influences from family, friends, culture, other wonderful writers such as you, Empress. I can't express the fulfillment of having you as a friend. Have an amazing and joy filled day. Blessings, MY Dear Friend, Daniel

in solitude found both peace and despair a paradoxical dance where creation meets air...the Bell Jar, as in Sylvia Plath’s book? Loved the “babbling brook” and “nature’s apothecary.” …the balance between self-reliance and unity…love that! A nice finish in the final topic. Life indeed has paradoxes. Enjoyable and thought-provoking read, dear Daniel! You are a deep thinker as well as a poet.

Dear Kim, I am glad your recognized Sylvia's book title. I just read this book for the first time a month or so ago. She is one of those writers who was filled with style and her tragic life ended way to soon. There are other influences in here also because I love reading their eloquent writings, such as Emerson, Browning, and Thoreau. Thank you for your visit and beautiful comments. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel
