Today's Homily

Listen to poem:
In those days, when we feared the truth

not for ignorance of it within ourselves

but for the dangers posed by speaking aloud

against the prejudices of masses too well-tutored

in lies and hatred, we kept our secrets

and hid among the crowds, assuming

their rabid colorations, spewing the same

evil venom, spreading all the same lies,

pretending that the past was better

than the present, that regression

to our yesterdays, the years gone by,

could create for us, anew,

that Eden we all lost, that sanctuary

from our knowledge of the world, of evil;

and, our regained ignorance

would restore the bliss we lost

with our innocence. That, the biggest lie,

feeds our growing xenophobia --

hastens humanity's ultimate demise.

Time does not flow backwards in this universe;

and there is no "us versus them" --

we are all crowded here together

on this fragile planet, all in this together.

We must be kind, and love one another, or die.

"prejudices of masses too well-tutored in lies and hatred." Unfortunately, this is the platform of today's Politicians. Say and do anything to WIN, we have big money at stake! Thank you ..I think you are brilliant

This poem lifts its message over the words like a warm wind might rattle the leaves on a summer's eve, leaving understanding and sadness in its wake. Emile. #7

well stated Leo I must admit I do often harken back to the 10 years I spent in E. Africa between 1950-1968 although realistically I know it could never be the same. great poem hugs 7

Your descriptive wording and great imagery brought it all to heart. The words are wise and the hurt is real...leaving a feeling of blind acceptance. Emile. #7

What a wonderful profound write this is Leo! The answer is so simple but so hard, kind of an oxymoron that no one seems to have the answer as to how to bring this about. Your last two lines say it all!

Amen! Lofty words, my friend, but you forget one important thing about humans, and if you care to read it, go to Jeremiah 10:23. Religion will not bring about lasting peace because it is hopelessly divided. Sorry to be a sour apple but that's how I see it. Thanks for reading my misplaced modifier. / M

Great title. I read your poem then re-read your poem to study the words, now I will meditate on what you have written. We are not separate but only in our distortions. Jim

yes, I love what you are saying (in your reply to m e) I think the very fanatical religious right does not see that as well as some others do.

thought provoking, as rhonda says. Not exactly sure i understand what you are saying about people wanting to go backwards in time to the Eden we lost. Personally, I feel an eden could not exist for us because if we went back to that time, before adam and eve "figured things out," none of us could be born!!!

Thanks, Andrea...I don't think I was saying anything about people wanting to "go backwards in time", but rather that many tend to romanticize the past and wish that the present were more like those times, which we can never really recapture, instead of working with today's realities and opting for inclusiveness, acceptance, and political and social understanding and good will.

Thought provoking, powerful message, Leo. Yes, we are all crowded here sharing this planet, and we should be kind and loving...I thank you for your visit to my page. Your comments, though I don't agree with, I respect. I do not exist without God, so naturally my writing reflects my faith. That's my heart...hugs, Rhonda
