To Live a Long Long Time
When I was young, I thought my life to be
a story book: a bean stalk I would climb
with treasures at the top at last to see.
How sweet to get to live a long long time.
Along the way, some things were hard; some great!
I liked especially when I reached my prime.
Though “good old days” can quickly dissipate,
how sweet to get to live a long long time.
Oh, to go back, knowing what one learns
from past mistakes (for youth’s a misspent crime!)
but round and round and round this big world turns.
How sweet to get to live a long long time.
Time brought old age to me, and pain came too.
How weary I am growing of it. I’m
amazed I once believed this to be true:
How sweet to get to live a long long time.
