Thoughts On the Classical Sonnet
I am firmly convinced the sonnet is the goddess
Or, perhaps, the queen of verse in perfect timing,
Fourteen exquisite lines of flowing metered stress
Frequently in quatrains with alternate rhyming,
The iambs march like rigid soldiers across the page
Reading like classic poets supposed poetry sounds
For centuries in poetry, sonnets were all the rage,
To write the exceptional sonnet still confounds.
The modern poets have largely abandoned her
And turned to less formal forms of expression.
The days of the well-tempered sonnet are a blur,
Centuries have passed, but returns the impression
The sonnet, in purest form, is making a comeback
This sonnet, for example, awaiting critical feedback.
