Thirst Comes First

THIRST COMES FIRST The year 2035, The queue two thousand long, Could the old survive, And be strong, Could the young stand Enough before their little Legs caved in whilst holding Dad’s hand, Who already had a baby In the other arm, And mom pregnant, no maybe Quite certain! What are these desperate People doing, Why this long queue? Thousands standing, Not just a few. They want water to drink, Of nothing else Can they think! A Water tanks arrives, And chaos erupts, Please we are thirsty, Help us survive. Thousand push and more And even more, The tank topples, Its containers burst, No more queue, No matter who was first! The cracked hot ground, Quickly absorbs this Precious, life giving Water, no longer To be given or found. So the people start, Another queue, the weak Drop down dead, Others go crazy, But one finds a leak Dripping from the fallen truck, Others push him away, A stampede starts All trying to suck, From this tiny drip. Another water truck arrives, And the same begins This time they bring Out knives And kill all in their way, Life on earth has become hell, Without water they Will not live another day. So to avert such a disaster, Use water sparingly, For we will most Definitely have to share, Don’t be unfeeling And greedy, Just use enough , And what is fair!

You paint a bleak picture of what lies in store, Jenny, and this could happen in the very near future unless we take drastic action before it's too late. Burying heads under the sand will not solve anything. In Malta we have no mountains and rivers, so we depend on rain, much of which goes to waste. Fortunately we have several reverse osmosis plants which turn sea water into good drinking water. ~ Warm regards & hugs // paul

Hi Paul, Its horribly scary, and sadly predicted. Yet water pipes around the Johannesburg area sometimes burst and water runs to waste for 2 or 3 days! Cape Town 6 months ago were in a crisis, no good rainfall for about 2 and a half years, fortunately at the 11th hour they had a few healthy storms - Johannesburg is predicted to have a water crisis by 2025! Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

Hello Jennifer … in the back of my mind I've had this feeling that in the future, wars will be fought over water. Perhaps your poem is truly a look into the future. I hope a solution is found before then - thank you Jennifer - Lindsay

Yes, you are quite right Lindsay, mankind I feel will go to war over water - but this unfortunately is going to happen sooner rather than what has and is predicted. They must desalinate our oceans, but water will then come almost at the same price as buying gold today. Thank-you Lindsay, Poetry hugs,Jennifer.

Omg !!! This needs to be shared to as many people as possible. This shows the instant need to save water and of course the other natural resources as well. If not, life becomes hell and earth becomes a graveyard.

Wow. What a dramatic, vivid illustration of the fix we are in. This really brings it to life. This is really effective and should be made public, methinks. :) gw

Hi Gershon, I will certainly try all our local magazine editors, and overseas news papers. The situation is grave - immediate action is required. Thanks for visiting my friend. Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

Hi Andrea, that's only 15 years away - we might still be quite alive! Thank you for a lovely comment, who knows maybe it will be later, don't stress my friend, by that time they will desalinate sea water, I'm sure. Poetry hugs, Jenny

It's scary that so much of the Earth's population has limited access to clean water, Jennifer. Your suspenseful poem reminds me of a song from the movie "Billie Jack" called "One Tin Soldier." In it, people destroy themselves in warfare to obtain a treasure hidden on a mountain. When the treasure is finally found, it simply says, "Peace on Earth." Very nice job with this poem. I am tending to health and other issues now. Hope to be back after Easter. Love, Carolyn

I hope nothing serious and wish you get better soon as I am sure everyone misses you as much as I do. It is a hectic situation into which we are heading. Our two married sons and their wives have decided not to have children. Love and hugs, Jennifer

I feel blessed that we are able to have a water filter for clean water to drink. I can relate to your poem and feel such compassion for all who thirst. I am passing this down to my grandkids. A wonderful poem to bring attention to their plight. xxoo

Im honored Connie, that you would think of giving your grand children this to read, but pray that this disaster is averted! sea water is the answer, they must desalinate it - water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink! Blessings Connie, Jennifer.

Water has always been precious in my eyes and I give thanks daily that I have clean water to drink and pray for those who don't. We have water filters here because our water is piped in from across the island and sits in huge containers that have rust and contaminants. On our mountainside is clean wonderful water but the military claims it and so we are stuck with getting our water in holding tanks. Contd.

Hi Connie, we think absolutely the same - It has got to the stage that our own two married sons are not going to have children, this being their primary problem - they don't want their children to suffer . So sad I'm never going to be a grandmother, but can understand their point of view. Cape Town in South Africa had a three year drought, terrible, prayers even during work hours at industries and commerce took place all over South Africa . It is guesstimated that by 2025 it will be our turn in Johannesburg. I understand that in California they have water police patrolling, the world seems to waking up a bit even here where we live if the feel we have gone over the limit they fine us Thank you for such an informative comment. Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

In California, we have had a drought and water police drive through neighborhoods to fine us. The irony, Jenn, is companies are making beau coup bucks, taking our water and selling it to other states! They get no fines! But we can't water roses? What nonsense,Panagiota. Good piem for being accountable.

Oh mon ami that is so sad -sounds worse than South Africa, cest affreux! However we are fined by remote control - the water and lights department measures our usage, penalties are levied on our monthly account. Aren't you allowed to use a watering can? I would hate my roses to die, and especially as they were planted by my father man, man years ago. Thank-you Panagiota for such a relevant comment. Hugs, Jennifer.

My pleasure Joseph, your poem was great. We are in for a rough ride 10 years down the line - I don't know why governments are not taking drastic action as of now, yesterday if possible. Thanks for your apt comment Joseph, Poetry hugs, Jennifer

This is quite a warning Jennifer..and I must say you are on mark with this prediction. Something like it is already happening..we haven't felt it yet. Kudos for the theme. So well written and delivered..should make us all think. FYI for those who visit me: I will be away one week starting 4/7.

In school, 50 years ago, we were always raising money to help drill for clean drinking water in Africa, and yet it is still an issue. I wonder if any of our money ever made it there?

I wonder David, the same as when a disaster happens and we have a drop off point in some mall for tinned food blankets and clothes, i wonder if any of these make it to the desired destination! Thank you so Much David for an apt comment. Poetry hugs, Jenny.
