Thinking About My Poems

Occasionally I write a pretty darn good poem Worthy of a place in any collection of verse But sometimes I wallow in meaningless drivel Writing nonsense and, undoubtedly, worse! I love when flowery phrases drip from my pen Even indulging myself in words clearly archaic But, too often, without ever realizing it’s true I write stanzas I think good, but they’re prosaic It makes me feel so proud when I craft a poem That fits together like a colorful cut glass mosaic.

I enjoy it when this happens "That fits together like a colorful cut glass mosaic." Often I am surprised by what my poem has chosen to do.

Indeed, sometimes we just have to let them write themselves. If something goes wrong, you can always blame Trixie!

Hi Milton This is a wonderful poem, about poems. I like everything about it. It is a great feeling when everything comes together, at last. Your verse is delightful, your rhyme is superb. Thank you, by the way, for being the only person to provide me with a comment since Jan 11. I know I need to read and comment more myself. Take care.

Well, thanks, Bryan. I read almost every poem that appears in the New Poems every day, but I only comment when I am particularly moved to do so. I must have really been impressed by your poem to make a comment. Why others don't I have no idea. Yes, I have found that comment breeds comments and, of course, I am deeply committed to responding to each comment I receive.

Thanks for the compliment, Deb. Sometimes I have to "fish" for them, eh? (chuckling)

There’s nothing quite like reading that poem back for the first time and knowing you’ve written something special. I’m sure you’ve written very little drivel, Milt. Terry

O my God, Terry. You have no idea. I write some drivel every single day...some I erase never again to see the light of day, but, occasionally, I put one on here. Then, a week, a month later I read it go, "Oh my god, what were you thinking!" Thanks for your comment. You are too kind!
