Notes About The Poem

Their Rainbow Colored Camouflage

Some people wear smiles out in public
as if those smiles were sewn on their faces.
Often they are adorned by costly apparel.
The women, in flattering makeup and
with hair beautifully coiffured,
flaunt gowns created by renowned fashion designers
and accessorized with glittering jewelry
and expensive heels and handbags.

They are the rich, the “beautiful people,”
social butterflies in a rainbow of colors
seen attending their special clubs and functions
or charity benefits,
where they flit about with others of their elite class.

I have seen them on television
and representations of them in movies.
I suppose viewing them impersonally this way
is the closest I will ever get to them
as I sit watching them from my well-worn sofa,
knowing that nobody can have a life
so seemingly perfect
yet marveling
                        at their rainbow colored camouflage.

Andrea, this hits home. The electronic age has enabled the media to stuff the celebs in our faces. The media can sell ads and make money doing it, and the perfect people also get paid plenty. It's a crazy set up.

Good use of word choices to draw the reader into this story of flamboyant opulence. The descriptive imagery clings to this piece like a second skin adding weight to the words as they are visualized within the mind's eye. Emile.

Awesome narrative, Andrea! I was being lazy about writing a narrative, but I might still change my mind. I know this will do great! Hugs, Rhonda

Beautiful smiles behind flashing cameras, what else when they have everything at their beck and call. So Nice to read your poem after a long while Andrea.

I think everyone in the picture is happy because they were 'over-served.' You echo thoughts I've heard from many over the years and have learned they are but echoing thoughts from many over the centuries. This is straight to the target! Hugs ... CayCay

Lovely write, Andrea. I follow some of these socialites on instagram. I also wonder how they can keep up and continue to look so flawless in the process. Great narrative. Hugs

MONEY, SURGERY, NANNIES, MAIDS, GARDENERS, and the POOL BOYS - they have nothing else to do except 'keep up.' I'll stop there. Hope it is okay that I jumped in right here, I couldn't resist. CayCay

You hit the top and bottom of it with this Petal, the pay gap is the culprit which denies those little extras to so many who could otherwise live a more satisfying life, though never as, or wanting the exuberant life style you so well project in this write. Wonderful piece of social commentary. Take care, Richard

Love your comment, Richard. The new president took even more taxes off the rich thinking that trickle down effect works?? Are you kidding me. That was disproved when Bush did it and our economy collapsed in 2008. we are headed for disaster. Those rich better have underground homes built coz there will be an uprising one day and I am afraid of the mayhem that will ensue as the poor get to the point that they can't take it any more.
