The Widow-Maker

Miners aplenty Succumbed to their profession Which left their families In loss depression The cause of their plight As they went about their tasks Was the airborne killer Not protected by masks The pneumatic air drill Powerfully fed For the dust it created Left many miners dead This genius of tool To be life's taker Earned it the nickname The Widow-maker http://www.thehighlanderspoems.com/loss-3.php

Wow James!!! A HUGE thank you for all of your awesome comments. When you read the one that I just posted - you may want to grab the tissue. This was a very painful one to write, but feels better getting it out there. I too, must admit - I love the Aging Process - how true it is - thankfully, I'm not there yet - and as far as the island goes...still looking too! By the way - you write heartfelt, very touching poetry yourself. I really love this one, sad, but so true. Love, Kelly

Such a hard way to make a living. I was born In the Maritime Provinces of canada. I remember as a child watching television and all the wifes waiting to see if their husbands were still alive. The spring Hill Mine Disaster. They closed the mine down after that and Spring Hill virtually became a ghost town. Great writing, Jim. Love, Lainie

Short and sweet. Nice topic. Many still die in the mines today. People in America get the black lung from the mines. They did get the brown lung from the cotton mills. From all industry they have asbestosis and die from it. My husband has the asbestosis from the plant where he worked when he was young and didn't know that he could do anything else. Keep writing.
