Notes About The Poem

For Anoucheka Gangabissoon's After The Party, I Woke Up On A Tropical Island Poetry Contest

The Tropical Island

Having partied all night on a yacht
and then fallen to sleep on a cot,
how strange it all was
when I woke because
on the cot on the yacht I was not!

On a tropical island was I,
looking up at a beautiful sky.
Asleep by my side
I saw the tour guide -
a charming and gorgeous young guy.

I’d blacked out when a storm sunk our boat,
but somehow with this man I did float
to this nice tiny spot,
Like the guy, it was hot
and from civilization – remote.

As it turns out, the man knew all ways
to survive, and we’d been there for days.
Well, days became years,
but I’ve got no fears.
For the man-mate I’m with never strays!

Hi Andrea what a fun write and how creatively you have penned these awesome limericks perfect rhyming, I love this poem - good luck in the contest. Your handsome tour guide sounds great, he can't swim as far as any land mass, so he is there for keeps! Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Yeah, a rare quality in young men that being stuck on an island would cure!

Andrea, you have such a great sense of humor and can relate a story that makes us laugh. I would say you have some natural ability as a poet that few of us can replicate. I suppose that there's no way for infidelity in this case! Did you ever see Lina Wertmuller's film "Swept Away"? It has a similar theme to your poem, but there is an epilogue after the characters become lovers. I think you would be amused by it. She died in the past couple of years and there is a lot of information about her on line. Well worth looking at it is.

Yes. I think I saw it. The ratings for it are poor though and I recall thinking it was not the greatest movie. But I noticed a really old version of it they may have been better. So it was a true story then!

It's about a shrew who gets stuck on a deserted island with a crew member after their skiff engine fails and a storm washes them ashore. After they finally come to terms with the situation and she falls in love with him, he arranges a rescue and buys her a ring with the reward money. The ending is a comment on Italian culture and life in general.

Thanks, Duke. I tend to be eclectic. I believe I saw that movie. It was a box office dud as I recall. I thought it was fiction. I may be thinking of s different movie with same title so I will have to look up her name!

One sure-fire way to ensure a fidelitous relationship, I suppose. A bit overly dramatic...but, hey...whatever wrecks your boat...er...rocks your boat. A delightful piece, Andrea.
