The Test of a True Friend

If you want to know if they are a true friend, Ring them at 2 am. Ask for a lift to the airport. Seek a reference. Give them the opportunity to help you with a project. Do they drop you off on the corner or to your front door? Will they tell you what you don't want to hear? Stop you from making a mistake or think it funny when you do? Do they invite you into their lives? Or do they pretend not to be in, to you? Do they take your advice? Can you laugh alongside them? And cry in front of them. Are their tools in plain sight? Where are they when the weather changes? To find one such as passes this test, Is rare indeed, Not to respond in kind, Gives a clue to a state of mind, That will leave you out in the cold, Which is no place you want to be, when you grow old, Too proud to ask for a second chance to enter the fold.

Hello David I like this poem. You know something? I have realized that a true friendship is hard to come by. Two of my best friends have passed on. Now I have two best friends left. Have a nice day my friend.

Nice to hear from you Darlene. Friends help us keep things in perspective. I see a friend down the road once a week and we pig out on chocolate and fortified coffee and I read my poems. Glad you have friends still.

Excellent poetic reflection on the acid test of friendship. I like the superior craftmanship you've exhibited. Thank you for creating this poetic nugget. John, Zambia

Very kind of you to say so John. Thanks for taking time to read. I think it is important for parents to give children an understanding of how important friends are and what it takes to be a true friend. Regards David in NZ
